My biggest pet peeve
OK. Maybe it's not my biggest pet peeve. (I have many of them.)
But I like to call myself open minded, so I welcome criticism of my opinion.
Here it is: I hate it when people water their lawns on hot, windy afternoons.
Ahhh! I get mad thinking about it.
I really don't think lawns should be watered at all. In my opinion, it's just grass, and it will grow back next summer.
That's easy for me to say, since I've never actually owned a lawn. If you think lawn watering is a good idea, please convice me!
I'm fine with watering vegetables and flowers, as long as it's done in the morning or evening when the water doesn't quickly evaporate.
But when I drive by someone watering their grass in the afternoon ... when you can just see the wind blowing the water onto the street rather than the grass ... the thought of that wasted water makes my blood pressure rise.
Am I alone on this one?

I realize this is really far AFTER the original blog, but oh well.
Anyway, a great way to keep flowers, plants (and maybe grass) is to use used coffee grounds as a mulch/plant food. I just resurrected some flowers where I work. They were pretty much dead until I brought in some of my used coffee grounds, then they were sprouted back up within a couple or three days.

There's a war on, an election soon, a hurricane that just hit...but what does the greater Janesville area concern themselves with? The pet-peeve blog of Anne Marie Ames.
I agree with Ms. Ames, like many of you. And agree or disagree, you have to admit that 121 (122 with mine) comments posted speaks volumes about the amount of work done in Rock County.
I'd be willing to bet the author of this blog even thinks this is a little outrageous, right AM?

hannah--if you are in the lane closest to the merging cars, rule of the road dictates for you to get over (if possible).
.
I hate it when merging cars nearly come to a complete stop waiting for a break in traffic.
.
But, what I hate even more is when I'm merging and a semi, in the "slow" lane doesn't get over so I can get off the ramp and onto the highway...even though the "fast" lane is wide open.

ktaustin, I can't remember the source. But keep in mind that power mowers are not equipped like vehicles are for pollution control.
Good move on getting a powerless mower. And be prepared for people asking you what it is.
I don't think blade sharpening for this kind of mower is a negative trade off.

gazettefan, "The pollution that comes from mowing the average lawn with a power mower is more than the pollution that comes from the average vehicle driven from here to St. Louis."
I would like to see the study that concluded that. Not that I'm necessarily disagreeing, just that there's so much variety in mowers, lawn sizes, and cars, that I'm curious how they actually figured those numbers. In any case, I'm not getting rid of my riding mower (I live on 2 achres), but I might consider a non-powered mower to replace my push mower (that I use for spots the riding mower can't reach). Except I've heard it's a lot more expensive to get the blades sharpened on those; is it really worth it?

This is all just a bit crazy to me, our society anymore has nothing better to do than to complain about what other people are doing. It's my lawn and my water I'm wasting, who cares if I do. I smoke, and I smoke outside so that my kids are not around it. Now if I didn't smoke outside someone would have something to say about that as well. I try to be courteous to others who don't smoke but I will never make everyone happy and have accepted that.

Biggest pet peeves: Here's 3 of mine: Number one on my list is when someone parks their vehicle directly across the street from my driveway and I almost hit their car every time I back out of my driveway. I don't think people think about things like that when they park their cars. Or if they park within the 3 feet of your driveway and you can't see around them when you back out. I think people are just too self absorbed to notice anything that might affect someone else. Number 2, I can't stand it when I'm trying to get on the highway and someone is driving and talking on their cell phone and they don't move into the other lane to let me on. How Rude! Number 3 playing your music so loud and assuming I want to hear your type of music or you are driving down the street and your music is so loud that the pictures on my walls all shake. I'm sure I'll get some responses to this one!

On a serious note for anyone who cares...sprinkler systems are more economical than using a hose and sprinkler because you can set the timer to start at night or early AM...the water can be metered to allow only a certain amount each week...
and as far as watering in the rain, most systems have a rain gauge that will automatically shut down the system once a pre-set level of rain has fallen. Sometimes even though it may be raining when the sprinklers are on, it's quite often not enough to really do much good, so the sprinklers will run until the pre-set level is reached...either from rain or sprinkler water.
And with a separate meter, it's really not that expensive.

Green grass looks nice....however, it's a luxury here compared to other places in the country that have been in a drought for years. Ever go in the Southeast, maybe the Atlanta, GA area???? Everybody's grass is crap because they have strict limits on how much water and when to water. My brother-in-law still mows (he's a WI boy at heart and doesn't hire landscapers like many others in the area) because they still have to keep it trimmed and take care of the weeds for their subdivision's rules. Everybody's grass is brown, but they still take care of it. Seriously...you can get fined if your water usage is high and you are caught watering past a certain time. So, your green grass is a luxury. Even my dad, the man who would mow for life, isn't that obsessed with making it green.

1) I've only watered my yard about 4X times this year. But I do water my flowers weekly if it hasn't rained, more often if I just planted new perennials – I usually water at night but know that is not always the best time to water perennials because of powdery mildew. I try to water in the mornings, but I work 8-5 Mon-Fri and don’t get home before 7 p.m. almost every night so end up normally watering at night. I do however, if I’ve just planted something the day before or a couple of days before water my new plants if I come home at lunch if it is extremely dry and they are wilting or dying, in order to save the plant. 2) I mow my lawn with a "green" push mower and normally do not scalp my lawn when I mow it because the push mower leaves a sufficient amount of growth there to not burn the lawn out. However, about 2X this summer I used my gas mower when I let it go for more than a week. Last time I used the gas mower, my yard looked dry and brown so in effort to make it healthier again, I did water it for a little while the next day. I also do not use fertilizers or pesticides on my yard or perennials.
3) I live on the corner of the street and almost all of my perennials are on the border of my property. I have to sometimes water part of the sidewalk in order to water the perennials. I do not intentionally water the sidewalk. Otherwise, I wouldn't bother because I really don't care about the terrace or the city's grass. I spend an average of 300.00/per year on perennials for my yard. If that is what I want to spend my money on, versus drinking it up in a bar or throwing it away in some other way, that is my business. So if protecting my investment is wasteful to some of you, I'm sorry. But people in my neighborhood appreciate my yard and complement me on it all of the time. It IS a matter of pride because I want to have a beautiful yard that gives me peace, serenity and a way of communing with nature.
SFCM, just because I'm frustrated with society’s way of thinking does not mean I'm an ogre and not a nice person. I am one of the nicest most courteous people on this planet. I hold doors open for people, I say excuse me, please and thank you and say hi and smile at everyone I pass. I’m not arguing that people don’t have a right to share their opinion; I’m just saying that this is one of the most trivial things for people to get upset over. Why do people waste so much energy trying to complain or change things about other people instead of learning to let go of things that don’t concern them? Watering my flowers or my yard is not a personal attack against anyone. It is a matter of taking pride in something that I care about, something that is important to me.

My lawn was getting not so pretty but the upside was I didn't need to mow as much. We then got a really good rain and within a few days my lawn was almost as green as my neighbors. Unless you have a newly seeded or sodded lawn, your grass will be fine. Save the water for your trees and shrubs. They are not as forgiving. Green is always prettier than brown but brown is not dead, either. It will survive!!

I used to water my lawn in the early morning or just before dark. However, I'm a reformed lawn water person. The lawn doesn't die without water it simply goes dormant. As a result, as soon as the weather cools or the rain falls it will become green again. With rising utility cost and more focus on being environmentally friendly, I've opted to only water my shrubs and flowers as needed. I think as long as the edging is done, weeds are kept under control, and the lawn is cut, then people can still declare pride of ownership without lawn watering.

Pride of ownership? YOUR yard? How about OUR Earth? I'm not a "tree-hugging hippy" but watering your lawn is being greenly irresponsible and dare I even say inconsiderate? Let's use 100's of GALLONS of water so YOUR house has curb appeal and your toes can be tickled.
.
A house with an emerald green lawn in the middle of a drought doesn't show that the owner has pride. It shows the owner is superficial. Sorry.

I have never been a supporter of anything that encourages lawn growth; spring fertilizing, watering, fall fertilizing etc.

Well, Ann Marie, pride of ownership doesn't seem to be a concept with which you're familiar.
Who are you? The self-appointed lawn-watering police? Whether you think it's smart or dumb is wholly irrelevant. If my lawn needs watering, who are you to say it doesn't?
We aren't in a drought. And you do recall the spring floods, right? So if I can afford Milton's ridiculous water rates, I can water my lawn when I bloody well choose. And I don't have to answer to you, thank you very much.
If all that bothers you is the fact that your neighbors water their lawns at times you think inappropriate, then you seriously need to get over it and get a life.

I agree it is wasteful, and should be at night (and a lot less often). Simply mow less often. If you use the hose, do over the grass. Mow the grass higher also, and this will help it from buring out and keeps the weeds back a little. If it is dry out, don't walk on the grass. It causes the yard to turn brown faster.

Some people love having green grass,I myself love it, and besides, the birds take advantage of the water in the gutter's and they are so amusing to watch, so it's not a total waste.

I take pride in a beautiful lawn, but with a little research, a person will QUICKLY find out that you don't water during the day. You water in the morning or in the evening....AND you water to saturate not a little sprinkle here and there. If you water properly, it should only need it once a week, but people on here do have a point as well, grass doesn't "just die". It will prevail. But I have no problem if people want to water, just be smart about it.

Most people water (and fertilize) their lawns far more than they need to. The single best thing you can do for your lawn is "mow high", and less often. The weekly trim stresses the grass plants and forces them to commit more energy to growing the blade, which weakens the roots.
.
Most people don't realize that as a cool season grass (which is what people have around here), whether it's fescue or bluegrass or whatnot, it's natural for it to go dormant during the hottest weeks of the year. If you do your primary lawn maintenance in the fall -- seeding and fertilizing -- it will be healthier next year and will easily withstand a few hot weeks of sun. Another mistake people make is forcing the grass to grow through this period. You can do it, but it isn't healthy in the long run.
.
And healthy grass requires a lot less water.

concerned patriot--I think you're misunderstanding the point of people being concerned about others watering their sidewalks and streets. My bother with that is that sidewalks and streets don't need to be watered to help them grow. In fact, I enjoy walking through sprinklers as much as SarahB! I suggest you settle down with your bad self, and stop ranting about people who annoy you because stating their opinions. Our opinions are as important as yours after all! :)

For those of us that have newer houses and have had to spend hundreds of dollars on planting grass seed, fertilizing, replanting seed, what is wrong with watering our investments?

It's probably selfish of me, but I love it when people water their lawns and the sprinkles of water land on me. One person mentioned the soothing sound of the sprinkler or drops of water falling on the pavement ... that is a natural high, thekid3477 (but so is your's, I guess!). My only dispute with the watering of lawns is with those folks that use the timers. I know it can't be prevented without a lot of guesswork, but I think it is so ridiculous to see the sprinklers running during a rainstorm!

Here is a link to a history and critique of the American lawn. Lawn watering wastes an increasingly scarce commodity and causes pesticide runoff into lakes and rivers while compromising groundwater.

I don't have any problem if people want to water their lawns. I don't, because I don't need to where I am (in the country, apparently good soil), plus I barely can manage to keep up with mowing (haven't mowed in about 4 weeks), let alone watering on top of that.
The only complaint I would bring up is when people water just after a rain; why bother? But then, if they want to waste their money that's fine I guess, although it does irritate me a little when I see the state doing the same thing on the UW campus grounds (watering after a rain that is).

Well Ms. Ames, it's called pride. A persons home is their biggest investment. I can't understand why someone would not want to take care of that. With hundreds of thousands of dollars invested in a home, a few hundred bucks over the course of the summer is really not much. And you can have a separate meter installed for your outside hoses which makes it cheaper yet to water your lawn. I think I'm going to go outside, wash my truck and let all that water run down my driveway. Then I'll crank up the sprinklers and enjoy my green lawn.

I can't believe how stupid people are being about this. A person waters their lawn because they don't want the grass to be burned, brown and dried out. I water mostly just my flowerbeds and even people I'm sure have a problem about that because they could get wet walking on the street. But you can see in advance if someone is watering with a sprinkler and walk around it and avoid it. Duh! How annoying that someone thinks the world should revolve around them and someone should run out there and stop their sprinkler when they see someone coming. If I am the one holding the hose and see people walking down the street I am considerate enough to point my hose in the opposite direction so they do not get wet. It's not like anyone is going to spray someone on purpose. Watering your yard promotes a thicker more healthy lawn and that inhibits weeds. As to the time when someone waters: I think that depends on when the person is home and is not running errands or at work. I personally try to water earlier in the day if it's the weekend but during the work week I water either when I come home at lunch or after work. It also depends on whether I've just planted something new as well because you have to water thoroughly after that. I just can't believe how annoying this world is that people have to complain about something like this! Get a life people! There are much bigger problems in the world than if someone wants to water their lawn or not. So get over it! As far as conserving water, I do my best to let the rain take care of it, but in times of drought, I'm going to water because I'm paying for the water and don't want to waste the money I've spent on my flowers. My yard is something that gives me pleasure, I'd much rather be doing that than sitting on my butt and watching tv. Our summers are so short and our winters are so long. There is plenty of time to watch tv and read a book in the winter.

I'm with gazettefan: the more I water, the more I mow. I let my lawn stay a bit longer to help hold in moisture. Not obnoxiously long, but not putting green short like my neighbors. I've got better things to do than push a mower.

Besides who could afford to pay for the water bill? I am lucky I live in the country and have a well, but still I have to pay for the electricity for the pump, and I would rather save that money than let it go into the ground.

I had a crop circle in my backyard for 5 years now. We finally decided not to put up the 18' soft sided pool. (kids didn't want to swim in it anymore) Our neighbors have younger kids so we gave it to them. Anyway, we have this huge crop circle from the pool, so we seeded it. I have been watering it every evening for the past week or so. The grass has returned. Yeh! no more mud. Done with the watering too!

What's so difficult about understanding that green grass looks better than brown grass? A nice-looking yard adds to a property's appeal. Who wants to pay for a nice house, trim bushes, paint, etc. and then have the property sullied by a crappy-looking yard. If this bothers you, get a life. The fact it irritates you....I'll be watering tonight!

Actually, what really burns me is travelling to the Southwest, and seeing palatial homes with vast emerald lawns. It's the desert! People are not supposed to have Kentucky bluegrass covering their property! Imagine people in WI turning their front yards into sand pits and planting cacti, agave, and aloe plants...it's just not right.

there are sprinkler systems for those that can afford them. just set the timer to go off in the middle of the night. that way, when someone tries to break in your house, they get soaked!
it annoys me that people water their lawns for many reasons, but here are just some of them-- who really cares how green your lawn is? what is the use of turning the hose on when the water evaporates before it leaves the hose? why are we wasting water on weeds when there are droughts and people dying from dehydration?

I agree. I've also wondered about the irrigation going in the fields in the middle of the day. Sometimes on the road! The grass always comes back when it rains. No mowing with the lack of rain and, less gas is used. Most of the homes I see being watered, they have plush, green, velvet like yards. Status symbol? Not to me, you are a waster.

*Try* to kill grass, and you can't. It'll come back no matter how dry it gets.
As for the time of day people are watering, could be they are only home during the day and can't water in the evenings or mornings because they're working. But, it could also be they are just not informed about how much of the water they are paying for is being evaporated.
