Local 95 approves GM contract
By an overwhelming margin, members of United Auto Workers Local 95 ratified a four-year local contract with General Motors on Friday.
The signed contract is considered an important part of a presentation community leaders will make to GM officials in an effort to retain a GM presence in Janesville.
The automaker announced in June that it plans to cease production at the Janesville plant that makes full-size sport utility vehicles by 2010 at the latest.
After the vote, a union leader said the contract is concessionary, with significant changes made to decades old work rules in the plant.
But it also is highly competitive in that it would allow local workers to build a new product with much more flexibility and much lower costs.
For more details, watch for further online and print coverage in Saturday’s Gazette.

I don't understand why so many of you comment about this. How many of you even know whats in the new contract? Do you even know that GM will now put this contract before ALL GM plants in the USA. GM will tell them if you don't vote this in we will shut your plant down and give the product to another plant that will vote it in.
Do you dorks that talk with out knowledge, realize people will die trying to do a job they don't have a clue how to do?
The so called union offical gave Janesville the line of crap 'pass this contract and you'll have 1% of a chance they'll give you another product, and if you vote no, you won't have ANY chance' 1%? 1%! Are they flippin serious? 1%
There isn't a snowballs chance in h*** that Janesville will get a new product. GM and the union are partners in this joke on Janesville.
What's sad is the fact the Janesville union SOLD OUT their so called BROTHERS.
GM will now threaten to close any plant that doesn't pass this joke of a contract.
What I'd like to know is how much money the union officials here got 'under the table' from GM to get this contract passed.

If you arent' directly involved with GM maybe you should butt out??? Yes, they are scheduled to close soon, but there ARE products out there with NO place to go, plus; there is talk that GM officials have been looking at products to bring to Janesville. So let's please give this all a break and hope for the best for this community so that there may be a better tommorrow than it is today. Try and be supportive of those that may lose their jobs, and quit the finger pointing. I'll say it again.... it's this economy and the way some Americans buy the foreign products that is making this country go down the toilet. I agree also with 14isntenough, the people voted for someone that had a job at stake too; not the guy's that can leave tommorrow if they want to. And JD has proven that he is here like everyone else.

Just read about how the Government may bailout GM so it can re-tool it's older plants. Maybe there is hope yet.

Why are they approving a 4 year contract when the plant will be shut down for good in less than 4 months? Maybe they will be working for JP Cullen when they come in to renovate the plant.

dually6: You say JD sold us down the river & also are blaming the younger workers for voting for him. We weren't given much choice. Why would we vote for someone who has his 30 years in? That's the real reason we are sitting out with no jobs, because they don't want to retire. Fine with me I'm enjoying the Summer off. The real question should be how did President Bush ever get elected twice? I doubt it was the younger voters there.

villajanesville - You're obviously bitter. You seem happy to see this happen to GM. Apparently you must have been "turned down for a decent job like the rest of us" which is nobody's fault but your own. Grow up. Also, maybe you should spend some time reading the news, you stated: "No shortage of "S.U.V" buyers. That market is as strong as ever". Get a clue -- http://www.cnn.com/2008/LIVING/wayoflife.... The high price of fuel and sagging sales were not caused by GM employees.

laughwulive: Can you tell me where those $25 to $30 jobs are at here in Janesville? I'm sure alot of people would like to know.
villajanesville: Not everone who worked at GM, Lear, etc. owned big SUV's or boats or spent their money foolishly. And usually people who have worked their for 20 to 30 years are more work oriented than the young ones. Not saying that there aren't younger people who are hard working people, just that from what I have seen, a large portion of the young workers know how to use the system. There are some that do work hard for their money. And I am sure that there are some of the older folks that don't like to work either. Also, the ones that bash these workers who make more, are the ones that are jealous because they aren't making that kind of money!

excuse me but one question how much is this gonna cost the tax payers an the city to keep the plant here.Rember the Jackson street project who you think paid for that.an bye the way that road still isnt paid for.You could make a case for Gm to stay either way you look at it depending on your point of view. But rember this it has cost us plenty in the past at our expense. And what about those that cant retire an work for a gm suplier and have already lost our jobs cause of this. What happens to us is we still get screwed in the end.I hope that gives people something to think about when they decide if it is worh the price were paying to keep gm here.

About moving md duty back to janesville:I wish it were true, they won't.The reason why the sale of md duty didn't go through has to do with where we are on the economic cycle. Its in GM's best interest to keep md duty trucks now so they can make money from it when the economy turns(recessions only last about 9-12 months). Also when sales improve they could sell it for more.

gallon 76 good for you on your post! JD has fought hard for this place, and the rest of the shop committee. I am not an employee; but children are student's of mine. What that family has gone through with JD being gone to Detroit to do what he could for this place; many of you ingnorant folks must not realize!! They gave up their family all last summer while he was gone. The kid's have talked about the disrespect that gets shown to their family, that is UN-CALLED for. Act like adults!! Everyone should keep an eye on our economy, that's where the real problem is!!! I am happy for GM employees and truly hope something comes this way, as there is talk of it. And I also hope some of you pull your heads out and see that JD is here with everyone else, he doesn't have 30yrs in and still has children at home. He didn't leave for an appointed job. (hmmmm like someone did) He stayed here to fight for these jobs. Give the guy a break for trying to put up with some of you bellyachers that are never happy. If you got your 30, why the heck don't you go??? Seems the one's that give their time like these individuals on the shop committee never get the credit deserved, it's alwyas the whiners that never volunteer for anything or get involved that we hear from. GROW UP, and like the other guy said take you mom's advice about talking about others.

This is for you dually6! JD has not saved this plant. The people who showed up at the meeting and voted yes is trying to save the plant. The people who voted no was was putting the last nail on the coffin. The people who did not show up don't care what happens. JD has not sold us down the river, there are 7 people on the bargaining team not counting the district level. They all had a part in this. JD has never been in bed with Management and knowing JD like I do he never will. The last thing I want to tell you is that I am a older worker and you will never speak for me, and you said new hires, and can't remember the last time they hired anyone new. The people you talked to must know you and did the smart thing by not listening to you because you don't make sense.

I've lived in this area my whole life....I can not get over the negative attitudes towards our fellow neighbors, friends, family members, etc. I am embarassed to say that I live in the Janesville area with the attitude that some of you people have towards the GM workers. Good people don't continually wish bad things upon others......I hope something bad doesn't happen to all you GM bashers....cuz when it does.....I hope someone is as happy about your misfortunes as you are on others. Have some compassion people!!!! These people have families to support. Whether you lose an $8 an hour job or $50 an hour job....it's still your job, your benefits and it affects your family. How can you seriously live with yourselves by wishing such bad things on others? You should be ashamed!!

Please do not ever say that JD saved the plant. Give me a break. He sold us down the river a long time ago. Dohner has been in bed with management for years now.
He even managed to convince most of the new hires to vote for him--not once, but twice!!! Where are those workers now?--At home without a job. Way to go John!!! Us older workers tried to tell them, but they wouldn't listen.
Too bad we couldn't get him out of there before he managed to give away almost everything our union brothers and sisters worked so hard to get.. I was hoping to get my thirty in here and then retire. Guess that's not going to happen now...Gee John, where are you going to transfer to?? I hope it is far far away. Oh wait, you got a job, with the union--imagine that!! You made sure your butt got covered.

The Grapevine says JD saved the plant since GM and Navistar are not completing the sale of Med.Duty Trucks they are coming back to Janesville in Feb/09 and maybe if wages are made more competitive with 2nd tier workers or a buy down of wages we could get the Light weight Tahoe/Burb
