Walworth County deputy injured in crash with alleged drunken driver
LYONS TOWNSHIP—A Walworth County Sheriff’s Office deputy was injured by an alleged drunken driver while on duty early Monday morning.
Deputy Richard Johnson was patrolling in a marked 2008 Crown Victoria on Highway 12 south of Sheridan Springs at 3:20 a.m. when Walworth County dispatchers got a report of a car driving west in the eastbound lane of Highway 12 near Lake Geneva, according to a news release.
Johnson was at that stretch but unaware of the approaching 1997 Ford Thunderbird. He activated his emergency lights and tried to avoid the other car, but the vehicles struck head to head, off center, the release stated.
Johnson checked the other driver, Kevin W. Horvath, for injuries, and the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Office was requested to investigate.
Horvath, 28, Lake Geneva, was arrested for endangering safety by reckless driving and causing injury by operating while intoxicated. He was also cited for crossing the centerline, according to the release. He is being held at the Walworth County Jail.
Johnson was treated and released at Lakeland Medical Center.
Johnson was been a Walworth County deputy for seven months. He previously worked as a patrol sergeant for the Palmyra Police Department.

truecitizen- I have recently taken the class out at Blackhawk for bartending- and I was surprised to realize that if someone is getting/already drunk, and a bartender keeps filling their drinks- they can be held responsible for the driver's actions. For ex. If I was at a bar some night, hit you while drunk driving- you could not only sue me but go after the bartender as well. Maybe this needs to be put out in the open more so that bartenders are more aware of this as well.
There's always cops downtown by the Quotes(i wonder why they're by that bar!!!!LOL), and I know they sit and wait for people to get in their cars and drive away. Maybe they need to start spreading the night cops out by bars, so then they can bust them right then and there.

Believe me, I am the oposite of a socialist. Just trying to spur some thought, because people who drink and drive just don't get it. I like the built in intoximeter idea, but very improbable and impractical (for all cars). We could could start seizing peoples vehicles and turning them into cash for the community and police etc., but only after they are found guilty. I also think there should be tougher penalties and the offender should be made to follow through on their court ordered treatment groups, and prove they get something out of it.

How about instead of more government programs and limitations, why don't we just make the laws already on the books tougher? Why is it in this state that you can continuously drive drunk, get caught and basically just get a slap on the wrist?

It'd be nice to see auto manufacturers put breath analyzers in all new vehicles. That could be a start. Maybe state government could create a program to help people retrofit their existing vehicles with them. Any solution to help keep drunks off the road would be welcome.

It's like the energizer bunny...keeps going and going...This time one of our protectors was hurt. Thankfully it's sounds like he'll be okay. I suggest again, maybe a major change is needed. Perhaps the ditributors of the alcohol need to have limits put on them, or liabilities; or a change in our thinking about alcohol. I drink, but I can't understand the constant excessive negatives that keep occurring. I mean, just one bar sends 'home' dozens or hundreds of literally blitzed people!
