I need to drop the Sun Drop
Through the wind and rain, I recognized the blue glow as a pop machine.
As I pulled over and ran through the thunderstorm to buy a can of Diet Pepsi in front of the Afton Post Office, I thought, “Really, Ann Marie? You’ve got to take it down a notch with the caffeine.”
It’s getting bad. I have a cup of coffee in the morning when I get to work. I always make it half regular/half decaf.
Not too unhealthy, right?
Then I proceed to drink at least two—but I’m inching toward three—cans of Diet Sun Drop every day. That’s really bad!
I drink water, too. And herbal tea. I’ve been trying to substitute herbal iced tea for pop.
But I can’t seem to get past the craving for a fresh, ice-cold can of delicious soda.
And in the last few weeks, Diet Sun Drop has finally started appearing in 20-ounce bottles in the checkout cooler at Woodman’s. I’ve also seen it at Slantrax Video.
It’s like my dream come true! Diet Sun Drop in a 20-ounce bottle!?! No way! Even when I have cans of it at home, I buy a bottle. I feel I have to support the new product line so it becomes available at more stores.
Where will it end? Soon, I might be bathing in Diet Sun Drop.
Any tips to kick the unhealthy habit? I’m not good at kicking habits, for the record.
Here is a list of caffeine and sugar in sodas I compiled for a story I wrote once about Sun Drop:
Sun Drop – 63 mg caffeine, 33 g sugar
Diet Sun Drop – 69 mg caffeine
8 oz. brewed Coffee – 80 to 135 mg caffeine
Mountain Dew – 55 mg caffeine, 47 g sugar
Coke – 34 mg caffeine, 40.5 g sugar
Jolt – 71.2 mg caffeine, 79 g sugar
Brewed coffee – 80 to 135 mg caffeine

Hannah--So, you inhale your beverages? Inhaling/aspirating is different than drinking.
.
What you are referring to is a medical phenom called "dry drowning." If he "drank" the pool water like you and I drink a glass of water, the contents would have ended up being filtered through his kidneys and excreted via his urinary system. However, this is not what happened. The pool water he was "drinking" was aspirated into his lungs. While he did not drown in the pool, his cause of death was DROWNING NOT drinking too much "kool-aid."
.
I'm happy that you have strong internet skills. Perhaps you were looking for this article.... Really read it and even look up the big words if you don't understand them at first pass.

I found it easy to stop the soda by drinking bottled water with wylers To go packets my Favorite is the Pink Lemonade you can get it at walgreens for $1.00 for 8 or 10 packets or you can get in a box of 50 for $5.00 you can also get it at family dollar sometimes or sentry foods and the wonders bread store on kenndy road. I only have soda once in a while and I don't miss it so much now that I found something new. So good luck and I hope maybe if you give this a try it may help..

I used to drink mt dew all the time, but now I think it tastes like straight syrup! But I do have a weakness for Sun Drop & Vault. I usually only drink diet coke, but every once in a while those 2 are really good! But one thing I learned is that while I'm on break at work, if I get a pop, I have a water bottle sitting there the entire time too. This way, instead of just chugging a pop, I'm drinking less pop but still getting a little. And a suggestion that's really good, Sam's Choice flavored water. I hate flavored water, but it's actually really good and tastes a little like clearly canadian, but way cheaper!

When I was in San Francisco we stopped at a restaurant on the wharf. When I asked what kind of pop they had,our waitress started laughing and asked where we were from! She was tickled when we said Wisconsin as she was from Whitewater. She said only people from the Midwest call it "pop"!! She said whenever she heard it called that it was like being home!

Well I don't drink unleaded Sun Drop, but I do drink regular Sun Drop. That is the best from a can and out of a cooler of ice. I did quit smokeless tobacco cold turkey two years ago this sept. after 20+ years of doing it. Not the first time I went around with quitting that habbit, don't think I would want to give up Sun Drop though. I am so glad people still refer to "soft drinks" as pop not soda. That one ticks me off! Most of you have used that word and I can't get it through my kids heads. They like to say soda. Party on all you POP drinkers!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, I hear you there Ann Marie...I drink WAY to much Diet Pepsi. I have actually started cutting back this past week and the headaches have been HORRIBLE. But...it may also be due to the fact that I started everything in the same week. I cut back on Chocolate *sigh* and the Dt. Pepsi and eating more fruits and veggies and less red meat. I am surprised my body hasn't rebelled yet. I survive on Raspberry Dasani. 0 calories. I can't stand regular water. Like someone else said, reward yourself for each can/bottle you DON'T drink. Keep the change or start a tally of each one and buy something for yourself when you reach your goal for the week. Then increase your goals each week. Good Luck...it's tough.

I’m not going to be much help on this subject, since I’m addicted to Diet Mountain Dew. Maybe we should start a caffeine pop support group? I’m in the crowd of people who think that moderation of anything is smart. As a result, I don’t think a can or bottle of pop a day will hurt anyone. Additionally, if you mix in some tea, which is high in antioxidants, you’ll be healthy while maintaining your caffeine levels. I’ve been enjoying sun tea all summer long, which in my opinion, tastes a bit better than brewed ice tea. I just sit my glass container outside in the morning and by the end of the day I have some great tea. I usually just leave the tea bags in the jar as it seems to maintain its flavor better that way.

I used to have a terrible Mountain Dew addiction. (A six-pack a day at my wost.) And while I still enjoy it, I try to limit myself to a can day.
I really like the Minute Maid Lite Lemonade. No caffeine and very few calories. Problem is, when I'm really thirsty I can drink a six pack in no time flat because it goes down so smoothly.
It takes a while to break the caffeine addiction. Yes, you'll get headaches, but eventually, it'll be worth it.

Lol..I didn't know there was any pop that had more caffeine than Mountain Dew!! I also had to give up Aspertame and caffeine. That leaves me with very little choice of pop, but one of those little 1/2 cans of cold regular Pepsi occasionally is a treat. I learned that I really do feel better when I drink water instead. I also like to have brewed ice tea now. Its lower in caffeine and virtually no calories if you don't sweeten it. Don't go cold turkey with your caffeine or you will get withdrawal headaches!

Sure miss ice-cold pop in bottles. Heavy sigh. My best friend and I would ride our bikes in from the country, hit the local grocery store for a big bottle of super cold Sun-drop and then sit in the park and yak for hours. Pop in plastic bottles can't compare and I can't stand the feel of a metal can against my lips so it gets poured into a glass of ice. Ahhhh Sundrop, a.k.a. "nectar of the gods."

Aspartame in diet drinks turns into methyl alcohol (wood alcohol) when you digest it. Methyl alcohol poisoning includes blindness, and death. It is sometimes used to denature ethyl alcohol to avoid liquor taxes. I always thought going blind, or dying because you didn't pay a tax was cruel and unusual punishment. Kinda got off topic here. Sorry. I drink Coke with lots of high fructose corn syrup. More nutritional, you know.

One problem with the diet soda is it contains aspartame. This substance can cause joint pain, brain fog, weight gain, tumors, vision problems, headaches, etc etc etc. Many doctors are looking at this world wide. Two weeks ago I ran across tons of info about this subject. Because I have many of these symptoms, I stopped my consumption of aspartame in my diet soda, sugar free gum, yogert etc. Most of the doctors recommend a 60 day test to see if you get better. I have had surgeries on my joints to solve the pain but they couldn't find anything. For joint pain search: aspartame synovial fluids. Aspartame hardens these lubricating fluids in your joints. http://www.holisticmed.com/aspartame/art...

Meh...you're probably just ADHD and don't know it.*grin* I use that as my excuse since caffeine is a stimulant and actually helps someone who has trouble concentrating to focus. It's also good for helping to calm down asthma attacks, though peppermint oil will do that job just as well (not dispensing advice here...just describing what works for some). When I was pregnant, the doctors all made a big deal about caffeine, but then a German study came out that tracked actual caffeine consumption vs. people who, looking back, assumed they drank a lot of caffeine because their kids were hyperactive...turns out you have to drink so MUCH caffeine to have negative effects in terms of a hyperactive child, it's nearly impossible. So, rather than feel badly about the caffeine, consider there are probably a lot of benefits you may actually be getting from it. Rather than give up caffeine, you may want to give up coffee or soda all together. The caffeine-free counterparts aren't as good (except for stuff like Root Beer, which isn't caffeinated anyway). Or just remember, everything's okay in moderation, and swap one Diet Coke or Coffee a day for a Diet Root Beer or (our favorite alternate) Sugar-Free Kool-Aid. Or swap the coffee for the Diet Coke and save a lot of caffeine that way. Just don't throw out the baby with the bathwater and cut all caffeine just because you feel guilty...unless you really WANT to.

The last Coke franchise that still bottles in the 'real' glass bottles is in Winona. MN. We go there twice a year to buy the 6 oz bottles and 12 oz bottles of Coke for our antique coke machine. There's just one small hitch, you have to bring your own bottles. They need to be the original return for deposit bottles. There's nothing like it to drink an icey cold bottle of Coke. We love it.

Kayla has a good idea. Don't go cold turkey; cut back in small, managable stages.
Also, pay yourself for each can of soda you DON'T drink each day. Any day you don't drink that third can, put the money you'd have spent on it in a jar. At the end of the month, buy something fun for yourself.
Then, think how much more money you'll have next month if you don't drink the second can...

Ann Marie,
I don't really have tips for you to kick your addition to the Drop... When I gave up soda, I just decided to give it up. I guess I thought about something my mom always told me: Why waste calories on a can of soda when you can expend those same calories on a piece of chocolate cake? Now while diet sodas don't have sugar (or calories), they're still terrible for you. My dentist once told me that while she was proud I'd given up soda, she was mad I was still drinking carbonated water. The carbonation eats away at the enamel in between your teeth, making you susceptible to cavities. Yikes!
Here's my advice:
Give it a try for a week (even just a work week if you're feelin weak), then two, then three. Or try cutting down to two cans a day for a week, then one a day for a week.
You've just gotta get used to it, I guess.
Good luck!
