Are you buying (more) locally?
As I wandered around downtown for a story yesterday, I ran across Brad Chaimson from Channel 3 in Madison also out reporting.
He did a story yesterday--Paying More At Pump Could Keep Shoppers Local--on how some local businesses are seeing increased sales possibly attributed to people buying local to save on gas.
Businesses such as the pharmacy are seeing increases over last summer, he reported, although I would bet part of that could be because of last summer's road construction that tore up Main Street. But other businesses such as Piggly Wiggly are reporting increased sales.
So are you changing your shopping habits because of the higher gas prices? I know I try to group my errands together and plan out where I'm going around town. I also try to buy local such as at the farmers market when I can.
Are you looking for ways to buy what you need within the city more than before?

OH- and I forgot to mention - you can purchase all kinds of wonderful organic grass fed and free range meats from these folks in Stoughton.

Basics has local meats - even sausage. And I'm shopping local more in both my groceries and when I go out to eat. I've found the price becoming closer to the regular grocery store as gas prices continue to aid in the increase of food prices. AND it's fresher & Yummier!

Sorgs is not the only place you can buy locally grown beef and pork from.
Schraedel's on Hwy 89 (just south of 18) west of Jefferson has EXELLENT meat. You can buy quarter, half, and whole beef and pig. They have a meat counter that is open M-Sat. You can buy just cuts of meat if you would like. Their natural casing hot dogs and brats are THE best.
Hosely's in New Glarus also sells local meat.
And possibly the Footville Meat Market might still too but I'm not sure.

I would somewhat disagree with the theory that local businesses are seeing increased sales because of people trying to save on gas.
.
I think the recent blip in sales (business sales everywhere, not just local) can be much more attributed to the tax rebate checks which have been dispersed all throughout the last few months; which was part of the economic stimulus package.
.
The GDP numbers just came out last week, and showed growth was a meager 1.9% rate. While it technically takes two quarters of negative GDP growth to be considered a recession, much concern has been raised that 1.9% growth in midst of all the rebate checks checks is not exactly encouraging. Without the checks, many speculate the growth would have dipped into negative ground.

There is someone at our farmers market that sells buffalo meat. I buy something from them each and every time I go. I tried their buffalo brats. They were fantastic

OOPS sorry wrong number it should be 295-9700 for the "Buffalo Dude" I forgot it was changed.
Buffalo is great tasting meat, and so much better for you. It is a little more in cost, but no waste or loss to shrinkage. When I make taco meat I only use buffalo anymore ! no grease !!!, but personally I love the whole muscle jerky and the brats.
He also has roasts, burger, baccon, hotdogs, steaks and more. You can even get dog bones.

talktalk I am sorry to say but your mind set if the reason why we import food from china and have big box discount stores everywhere. I personally make a decent living and will pay a bit more for something local. Somebody has too. Plus I feel great when I buy local, because I am contributing to my community.
Speaking of local If anyone is looking for furniture Stop at Sarah’s new and used across the street from Park Place pub. They have a great selection of antique furniture Plus they are the cheapest in town

jcabdriver- sorry that logli isnt local. but buy most other stuff from woodmans. I cannot stand woodmans wimpy, dirty, limp romaine or leaf lettuce for decoration. Maybe they could get another supplier of it. yea this time of year road side for me too. much easier than running in the store too. i do have some of my own veg growing in container pots. pepper, tom, acorn squash, cukes, green beans, herbs- from the farmmers market.

As for veggies, I grew my own this yaer to save money. It is very expensive at the roadside stands. I can pay $3.00 for a 10 pound bag of potatos at the store where it would cost me $1.00 a pound at the farmers market.

And yes the Heiders are the ones who had Miracle the white buffalo. They sell their meat all year long, not just at the farmers market.

YES you can buy buffalo at the Janesville and Beloit farmers market or you can call the Heiders at 925-7449. The meat is raised here in Janesville and is drug and hormone free. It is heart healthy...even better than chicken. You can buy it by the pound, or 1/4, 1/2, or whole buffalo.

hannah - good point on the buying local, but if I understand your post correctly, I think you have it switched around with the supermarkets. Logli's is owned by a company headquartered in St. Louis that has about 100 other stores. Woodman's is locally owned.
At this time of year though, I always try to buy from roadside stands.

I try to buy local as much as possible. I joined a CSA this year for produce and I bought chickens from a farmer I know. We get all our beef from family. I don't do these things to save gas, but rather to help local people not big conglomerations. And I like to know where my food comes from. I also like that transporting the goods takes less fuel/ pollution...like buying Midwest grown apples rather than Washington state apples, or jam from Wisconsin rather than France.

There are some local organic black angus beef producers. Sashay acres is on HWY 14, they are orgnanic and raise eggs, goats, and jersey beef as well.

I know there's a place on River Road that sells buffalo meat. I think it was the same place that had the white buffalo years back. I drive past it all the time and keep meaning to try some. What I'm really looking for is someplace where I can buy a whole cow/steer, or quarter/half. My wife and I were saving up to buy in on one of her grandfather's animals but then he passed away and his animals got sold off somewhere, so now we don't know where to go (I don't know if I want to commit to an entire buffalo).

For locally processed meat, check at the farmer's market in Jvl on Saturday's. There is a local farmer that I believe resides on CoRdH that has local meat. He has a stand at the market.

Does anyone know where one can find/purchase locally produced meat?

Yes. We used to drive to the store we perceive to have lower prices, but now we bike to the store that's closest.
We've always tried to do all our weekly shopping in one trip, but there's always something we forget or run out of.

talktalk- i understand what youre saying BUT remember they are local farmers and work very hard and cannot afford to sell things at the prices supermarkets can sell to you for. Supermarkets can also buy in larger bulk to keep the prices lower. i will take logli produce any day over woodmans and they are higher as well. but when the market or the people on the corner are in town i try to get there.

I stopped going to the farmer's market. It's too expensive. Woodman's and Walmart are cheaper. I'd like to buy locally, but when stores are cheaper, I'm sticking with the stores.

I try to buy products made locally whenever possible in addition to buying local produce. When I am reading labels I look to see where the item is produced (preferably Wisconsin, Upper Illinois or Iowa). More often than not, I'll choose a product from the area over a product made further away. I try to support smaller businesses over conglomerates whenever possible. I also don't get into the car if I can get something within walking or biking distance.

I haven't really changed shopping habits since I already buy everything in town after work (so I don't make a separate trip) or online. I have however stopped going 80 on the interstate (I keep it under 70 now for gas mileage).

I do all my errands on one day. My pay day. I also stay on the side of town closest to me and I don't leave town. The only other time I drive anywhere is when I take my 10 minute commute to work.
I've gotten my gas consumption down to about a half a tank over a two week period and I don't let my tank go empty ever. I try to time out stoplights so I don't have to stop and I try to take driving routes with the least amount of stops in them.
