Wis. State Fair officials warn of bogus tickets

By Associated Press   August 3, 2008 - 3:57 p.m.

WEST ALLIS (AP) — After a spate of useless tickets were presented, Wisconsin State Fair officials are warning people to only buy tickets from authorized sources.

Fair spokeswoman Patrice Harris said unauthorized sellers outside the fair gates have been selling tickets that have already been scanned and used for admission.

Once fair tickets are scanned, they can’t be used again. However, there’s no way for a consumer to know if their ticket has been scanned until they try to use it.

The fair says that through Saturday night, more than 3,300 fairgoers had presented void tickets purchased from unauthorized sellers.

MikeF: re-read the article. The scammed tickets are legit; just already used. So, unless the State Fair uses Staples to print their tickets, you're hypothesis is bunk.

The security is the bar code. It protects the state fair from counterfit tickets. After the ticket takers scan the tickets, they hand them right back. It seems to have escaped their notice that there is no way for a scam victim to know a used ticket from an unused ticket.

You're probably right. I'm guessing that there is no security built into the tickets. Too bad people get taken advantage of in this way. Scalpers shouldn't be too hard to spot. I hope that they have some undercover security people working on that.

The "unauthorized sellers" are probably using something like http://www.staples.com/office/supplies/p... to print the tickets.

If they can't be used again, why aren't they destroyed? Or if they are needed for another purpose, why not employ a little 20th century technology and punch a hole in them? Very sad that this is a problem for educated people.
