Correctional officer fired after sexual contact with inmate: Sheriff

By Mike DuPre' ( Contact )   July 30, 2008 - 7:39 a.m.

Rock County Sheriff Bob Spoden fired a probationary correctional officer Tuesday morning after an internal investigation showed the officer had “inappropriate sexual contact” with a female inmate, he said.

Fired was John K. Housinga, 27, Janesville.

“The internal investigation showed an inappropriate relationship between the correctional officer and the female inmate,” Spoden said.

Housinga had worked as a county corrections officer since September, making $15.89 an hour with a 1 percent bump because he worked second shift at the Rock County Jail, the sheriff said.

Cmdr. Tom Gehl, who supervises the jail, noted that any sexual contact with an inmate—regardless of consent—is against the law.

For that reason, Spoden asked the Janesville Police Department to investigate the matter as a possible crime.

The matter came to light July 22, when, he said, “we received information on inappropriate behavior from another female inmate.”

Janesville police have forwarded their reports to Rock County District Attorney David O’Leary for review and the possible criminal charges. The Janesville Gazette was unable to reach O’Leary on Tuesday afternoon to check the status of the criminal investigation.

I see the Gazette decided not to complain that this information release from the Rock County Dept; a week after the fact...like they did about the officer involved shooting in Walworth County. Hypocrisy anyone?

If there was any kind of reward involved with the sexual encounter then that is prostitution and Mr O'Leary will make Spoden give the jail away.

I'll bet the Gazette would love to have photos or video of this encounter! Sure would make for some great media wouldn't it??!! It would also give alot of the "simple minds" a reason to buy their paper as well.

He was a probationary employee. Unions don't protect probationary employees. They can be fired for any cause. However, every employee regardless of status is protected under state employment law. If this man was wrongfully fired, he'll lawyer up and he and the lawyer will get in line at the state cashbox faster than you can say "discriminatory employment practices".

He hasn't been arrested yet, therefore no mug shot to print.

hay northman not to get in to it with you but their are law's put in place for this type of stuff and if the person who got fired did not do it they would not have fired him, plus he is a union worker so they just don't fire you with out union rep.So he is out of a job.and may go to jail, the law is pritty strict on this matter.

Before anyone starts condemning Housinga, best wait for “the rest of the story”. So far, we have one con ratting out another con, not exactly the most reliable of sources. The “other female inmate” could have an axe to grind with this guy, and be lying through her teeth. Until we see some irrefutable evidence, like a video tape or some fluid samples, we ought to give him the benefit of the doubt.

I'm waiting for John K. Housinga picture and address. Oh, maybe that's inappropriate. The Gazette and it's double standards. Unbelievable Mr. Angus.
