Milton man called 911 hours after he crashed motorcycle
JANESVILLE--A Milton man called 911 this morning after he lay overnight near Interstate 90/39 ramp to westbound Highway 14.
Devin L. Elmer, 41, called the Rock County Communications Center at 8:50 this morning, Operations Manager Kathy Sukus said.
Elmer told Rock County dispatchers he had been in the ditch for 24 hours.
Elmer was transported to Mercy Hospital and then transferred to University Hospital, Madison, where he is in fair condition.
Elmer was driving northbound on the I-90/39 and failed to make the curve, according to a news release from the state patrol. His motorcycle left the pavement and landed 200 feet from the ramp in tall, thick vegetation, according to the news release.
Elmer heard his cell phone beeping and found it in the tall grass, Sukus said. He called 911 and told dispatchers he could see the Home Depot and that his cell phone battery was low.
Using Global Positioning System equipment, dispatch workers had just enough time to determine Elmer was near the 171 exit before the call ended, Sukus said.
“He was more coherent than I would have been,” she said. “He had heard his phone beeping—probably family or friends had called. He had just enough juice to call us, and he mentioned he could see Home Depot.”
State patrol is investigating the crash.
-- The Janesville Gazette will continue to investigate. A full story will be online Tuesday and in Tuesday's paper.

twstylvr, he was not unconscious, he did not use the phone right away because he did not know where it was until he heard it beeping, which he might not have heard, if he had a helmet on. A full helmet, which I wear muffle's sounds. I almost got ran over by an ambulance in downtown Rockford, because I did not hear the sirens until I was right on the intersection they were going thru, and because of the buildings, you could not see it until it was in front of you. Optimism, thank you, my thoughts exactly.

The paper today also said that the office did see him until he got out of his car so for those who drove that ramp during the time Devin was there don't feel guilty sounds like you wouldn't have seen him anyways.

Has anyone went to the multimedia and listen to the 911 recording. I cried to think that that could have been me or my family. I am very happy to hear that he will be ok. Prayers to you Devin and your family. The 911 operator needs to be commended for the job he did to get the info that was necessary for finding Devin in what little time he had. The paper today 7/29 said his phone had a 3 min 26 seconds charge. So unfortunate an incident but happy that he is alive.

Thank Goodness you nay sayers aren't EMT's. I can see it now.....oh, you weren't wearing a helmet...see you later, or oh you had a couple cocktails, you deserve to sit here and suffer....People are people regardless of their choices or lack of judgement. Don't assume all accidents are intentional. Of course it is first instinct to ask oneself what the cause of an accident is...that is human nature, the meaning of compassion is to excersice conversation ediquette (sp.) and keep those negative thoughts in your own mind.

This is horrible. I hope he recovers fast and becomes 100% again. I couldn't imagine what goes through your mind for that long not knowing if anyone is going to find you but you can hear thousands of people drive by. A friend of mine recently got into an accident and his car went over a embankment, they didn't find him for four hours and they found him in a tree. I hope this man recovers as fast as my friend did.

Hanna, YOU'RE posting here, so who are YOU to tell anyone to keep their comments to themselves?
Seems like you're the one making assumptions, here.

There is a very important lesson to be learned here...get a cell phone and keep it close to you. I drive down the interstate between Edgerton and Madison every day. I was looking at the sides of the interstate and realizing how easy it would be to have a motorcycle, or even a small car, be invisible if an accident happened when no one was around to see it. Even in the median in some places it is very brushy and thick in the middle of summer. It's a good idea to have one of those hammers to break your window and slash off a seatbelt, as well as a cell phone in a pocket, just in case. It might not be needed often, but if it saves your life just once, it's worth it.
I also hope this lucky man gets better soon.

A lucky person indeed...by the way several posters assume alcohol was involved and that he was not wearing a helmet. Pure speculation as the article mentions nothing about either.

For those of you speculating if he was intox or had been drinking - SHAME ON YOU! This poor man lay there for over 24 hours... It doesn't matter if he had a helmet or not - his back would still be broken. Either way you're all nasty people for slamming him and insinuating (sp?) it's his own fault. It's SAD SAD SAD!

2cents, I can tell you exactly how wearing a helmet could have changed this. He obviously lay there for 24 hours because he was unconscious for some portion of the time. Otherwise he would have used his phone before it beeped because of a low battery. Now, I am not in favor of a helmet law, because I think everyone has a choice. But, don't think for one minute that not wearing a helmet is a safe choice. My prayers are with this man and I wish him a speedy recovery.

No one seems to be mentioning the subject of the thick brush and veggitation. I have recently wondered about this. I travel hwy 11 and 14 alot to work(s), and some spots you could loose a vehicle. It wouldn't take much to keep all adjacent areas to the roads kept up to a standard. Might help with the constant 'tree in the road' after every storm that blows through, also. Simple, he would have been located right away if not for the weeds and brush. Hope he heels up well from the spill, and can ride again!

Of course cycle accidents have been in the news a lot lately, IT IS CYCLE SEASON, so what would make you automatically wonder if alcohol was involved? How stereotypical of you to go there.

Beattle..uhm yes he does drink. I have had a few beers with him recently. But that doesn't matter either way. It is very sad that this happen. We have had some bad accidents as of late with motorcycles. He is also a father and a very nice man. I heard he has a broken back and no feeling from his waist down. I hope he is able to walk again. He has a long road to recovery ahead of him. Also for all those pushing the helmet law...would the helmet have saved his back???
I wish you a speedy recovery Devin!!

Thanks goodness he is OK considering the motorcycle tragedies of late. Regarding the offensive posters, consider the source. Some folks only have big fingers they like to point from behind their safe "cyber-havens" and even bigger "cyber-noses". I skip over the postings from these "two-cent regulars".
