Favre featured in field

By Associated Press   July 18, 2008 - 7:20 p.m.

ELEVA —Carlene and Duane Schultz thought creating a corn maze featuring Brett Favre’s image on a Wisconsin farm would be anything but controversial.

The husband and wife said Favre is still welcome at the Schultz’s Country Barn in Eleva, even though they’ve received a few grumbling comments after the quarterback said he was considering a comeback and wanted a release from the Packers.

The Schultzes have had mazes created in their cornfield for the past three years and sold tickets for people to walk through it. The couple decided this spring to use Favre’s image as a “thank you” after the quarterback announced his retirement.

The family gives $1 from each ticket sold to the Deanna Favre Foundation, since Duane Schultz’s sister died of breast cancer.

“Once in awhile, we have people who come in and say ’No way. Not if it’s for him,”’ Carlene Schultz said.

Her husband said he’s not sure the grousers were fans of No. 4 in the first place “There are some people who complain about anything,” he noted.

The farm has been in the Schultz family since 1947. Carlene Schultz said she keeps up with the team, but her husband and four sons are the bigger fans. Duane Schultz said Packers fans gathered at the farm in the 1960s because his family was one of the first in the area to get a color television.

Schultz shared his solution to the Favre standoff: The Packers should let Favre start. “Favre’s got a couple of good years left,” he said.

The real problem, Schultz said, will happen if Favre ends up playing for the Vikings.

He said he doesn’t want to think about the prospect.

Here is a Favre tidbit NOBODY has mentioned anywhere as far as I can tell: Tonight at the Packer Hall of Fame banquet, they will not only induct Winters and Brown, but also announce a couple of awards from the 2007 season. One of those awards goes to the designated "Most Valuable Player of the Year" and I predict that it will be presented to Brett Favre. It will be interesting to see what happens after his name is called out!!

villajanesville: Southern Scum???? Washed-up Confederate??? There are many of us who originated from the southern states who are offended by that kind of stereo-typing. Who is still fighting the civil war now???

Thank goodness, you changed the headline on this article. I thought someone did some real bodily harm to Great #4! Finding his head in a field??? That was a little scary!

Just so you know you might want to check the spelling of his name in the headline of the article... :D
