ESPN: Favre wants release from Packers

By Associated Press   July 11, 2008 - 3:50 p.m.

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Brett Favre wants the Green Bay Packers to release him so he can return to the NFL with another team, according to an ESPN report.

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported Friday that sources close to Favre and the team told him agent James "Bus" Cook formally asked the Packers for Favre’s release in a letter because the Packers were not receptive about Favre wanting to play again.

The 38-year-old Favre retired March 6 after a 17-year career.

Messages left by The Associated Press for Packers general manager Ted Thompson, a team spokesman and Cook were not immediately returned.

The Packers plan to use Aaron Rodgers as their quarterback for the upcoming season.

seems we soon forget Hornung, Taylor, Montana, OJ, even the great Jordan...all have two things in common…you all know them by using a single name and they all ended their career's with teams we don't associate with them...

I read an interview with Ted Thompson late last night in the Wisconsin State Journal. I saw a lot of positive movement toward reconciliation by management's side and am beginning to hope and believe that this mess can be straightened out. The goal: Brett will remain Green Bay's starting quarterback.

"How does the greatest quarterback in the NFL suddenly become the most hated man in Wisconsin??? Find out next week on 'The depraved life of the American Football player'." Don't release him. He wanted to go out on his own terms so make him go out on the terms he made the team agree to.

I'd guess he'll eventually get his wish at a buyout price of $1 and end up playing for the Bears. They need a QB and would love to have an old nemesis running their offense. This story is going to be fun to watch. If it were me, I'd stay retired.

Let Brett play, he can still play at a high level. It would be a shame for him not to play. If Brett ends up playing for another team, thompson needs to go. I think people in the state of Wisconsin will want his head..

Not real impressed with Aaron Rogers, never once in his life did Brett to the Packer fans t put up or shut up. That is a clear sign of immaturity, and yes frustration.

Aaron I do agree I think will ask to be traded if Brett is the quaterback this year. But there are not guarantees he would start anywhere else either.

IF Aaron Rogers is the quaterback this year, he better pray he has a outstanding year. Because after his comments and the attitude he has shown Packer fans won't settle for anything less. He has put himself in that position.

Report: Favre re-thinking retirement
Apr 3, 2:53 pm EDT

LOS ANGELES (TICKER) —Brett Favre could be having second thoughts about retirement.
According to a Los Angeles Times report, the former Green Bay Packers quarterback, who announced his retirement last month, is contemplating a comeback with another team.

Citing NFL sources, the Times reported Thursday that Favre has been quietly talking with teams about their interest in trading for the three-time NFL Most Valuable Player.

On March 4, Favre, who played with the Packers for 16 seasons, announced his retirement during an emotional press conference at Lambeau Field.

However, Favre, 38, has yet to give written notice of his retirement to the league or players’ union.

Favre’s agent, James “Bus” Cook, told the Times he was not aware of his client’s possible interest in resuming his career.

“That’s news to me,” Cook said. “I don’t think it has anything to do with anything. He’s retired, period, point blank.”

During his press conference, Favre denied he retired because the Packers did not make a more aggressive attempt to sign wide receiver Randy Moss.

However, Favre’s decision came one day after the New England Patriots re-signed Moss to a three-year contract worth $27 million.

Friday, Apr 4, 2008 11:32 am EDT

Brett Favre, startled this morning to see the enormity of a report on a morning sports show that he might play football again, said he is not considering coming out of retirement.

"That's the last thing I'm thinking about,'' Favre told SI.com. "I have no idea where that came from, but it certainly didn't come from me. I'm happy about my decision and I haven't once said, 'I wonder if I made the wrong decision.' I know it's the right one.''

On Thursday, the Los Angeles Times reported that Favre's agent, Bus Cook, was asking around the league to see if teams had any interest in trading for the 38-year-old Favre. Thursday night, Cook denied that he was trying to find teams that wanted Favre. When the news broke, Cook called Favre and told him people were sniffing around about Favre coming out of retirement, and Favre was surprised to hear that the story had gotten legs.

I'm not about to judge Brett Favre or some of the comments on here--they are an interesting read at best.
.
Bottom line, we don't know what Brett is thinking or what makes him tick. Heck those closest to Brett can't guess what his next move will be or why. Brett is Brett simply put. But, yet, that's what has made ALL OF US (Packer fans or not) love watching him all of these years.
.
But, let's give a Superbowl winner, perennial Pro Bowler (NINE TIMES), and the NFL's ONLY 3x MVP a little bit of the benefit of the doubt. After all, that is all we really know about him. We all know him as fans, love him or not.
.
I can only imagine what being the star QB with AMAZING NFL records and imminent HOF status would do for a guy's psyche. Imagine the pressure you put on yourself to continuously excel and always be better than the game before. I can't imagine. I, for one, think the guy gets a pass on this one. He's earned his right to take back his decision; to a certain extent. He should be accountable, somehow however, to the fans that he made well-up on that fateful March day. A simple "I'm sorry....and I'll bring Lombardi's trophy home to prove it" is all it'd take for this supporter to don her Favre jersey once again with PRIDE.
.
He isn't a traitor or any of the other tarnishing names he's been called as of late. He isn't holding out for more money. He is still under contract and wants to fulfill that obligation; something the Packers aren't hip to.
.
We ALL have made knee jerk decisions and later regretted them. We all have questioned our ability to take on a task or continue taking on a task. Just because he is the Ironman of the NFL, doesn't mean he isn't human.
.
Despite having the inside track on this saga, the NFL isn't like any other reality I or the rest of us live in. Playing the game and giving it 100% is far different than screaming and throwing popcorn at the TV during a game ONE day a week on Sundays.
.
Brett has started close to 275 games. The last time a QB other than #4 started was September 12, 1992. How many of us could say we went to work and gave it 100% the night after our father passed away? During our spouse's bout with cancer? During an injury? Not too many I would guess. He hasn't missed a day of work, essentially, in over 18 years. Of course that's what he is paid "the big bucks" for. But, he also has been more than willing, to forego his "big bucks" to make room in the salary cap so the team could sign players for the betterment of the team.
.
Despite these soap operaesque developments in the last 24-36 hours, Favre is a legend and class act. Mike McCarthy does want him to play-- contrary to what is in the media right now. What else is he to do? Go against his boss, Ted Thompson, and risk being shopped around with Brett as a package deal?
.
Judging him or his decisions is irrelevant since we don't walk in his shoes. And, what big shoes they are!

The reports have the Packers agreeing to keep Favre on the roster ... as back-up quarterback to Rodgers. The brass know that would end Favre's record of straight starts. Also, can you imagine a good share of fans in the stands yelling for Brett to be put in the game?! Or have them booing Rodgers' every mistake? I think the best solution to this mess was suggested by a Green Bay Gazette sports columnist about 10 days ago: Bring back Favre and let him and Rodgers compete for the starting spot. (I would put my money on Brett ... if Thompson would be honest in his assessment of the competition.)

I cannot believe the "true Packer fans" would no longer support the organization if they release Favre. I am a Packer fan through and through and I believe Favre is one of the best QB's ever. However, the team cannot lower themselves to his childish like behavior. They need to move on. I think it will leave a bad taste in many fans mouths if Favre is going to cry and leave the team on a bad note. That one selfish act will ruin all the good memories that he has created for us.

.
Make Brett be Rodgers back-up. That's fine. After he plays more than 2 quarters and is hurt, Brett will "earn" his starting spot and never look back....just like he did that fateful day in September 1992 at Lambeau when "Majik" hurt his ankle.
.
It cracks me up to see how many supporters Rodgers has on these boards. Not just locally but nationally. A true Packer fan would know that "Aaron Rogers" is spelled "Aaron RoDgers."

Favre has been great...except in the playoffs:

2001 - 6 picks in a 45-17 loss to the Rams
2002 - 2 picks in a 27-7 loss to Atlanta at home
2003 - The pick in overtime in the 4th and 26 game that lead to the winning field goal in a 20-17 loss at Philadelphia
2004- 4 picks in a 31-17 loss to the Vikings at home
2007 - Another pick in overtime to seal their fate against the Giants in the NFC championship game.

Thanks for the one Superbowl win Brett, but this is not the most stellar post season record if you ask me, certainly not enough to place him so high on a pedastel, way above the rest of the team and organization.

My honest belief is that he won't be playing pro-football next year. Maybe I'm wrong. All of this talk seems like rumors, though. If he does decide to continue playing, I'd want him to play for the Packers. If he makes the choice to play for another team, I will respect him as a man and respect that he has made that decision as a man. He won't be a hero to me any more, though. I really hope he wouldn't abandon his fans like that. Honestly, if he switches teams... I probably won't even watch football next season.

Do not release him. That allows the arrogant egomaniac to go where HE wants with the Packers receiving NO compensation (plus it will probably take him two years to make up his mind where he wants to play).

The Pack should keep him and trade him to where they can get the most for him, hopefully outside the NFC North. This is a business after all. If this is not acceptable to Farve, then let him sit out a year and then he can play for anyone he wants to in 2009. Yes he has given us thrills for 17 years but he has really jerked around this organization for four years now. Time for this to end.

I agree with Aaron Rodgers - get on board or shut up Farve fans - it's time to be a true Packer fan.

The Packers issued a statement shortly before 4 p.m., about an hour after the story broke. It was not attributed to any individual. Rather, it was called a "statement from the Green Bay Packers organization."

A team spokesman said there would be no further comment beyond the statement, which read:

"The Green Bay Packers are aware of the latest developments regarding Brett Favre.

"Brett earned and exercised the right to retire on his terms. We wanted him to return and welcomed him back on more than one occasion.

"Brett’s press conference and subsequent conversations in the following weeks illustrated his commitment to retirement.

"The finality of his decision to retire was accepted by the organization. At that point, the Green Bay Packers made the commitment to move forward with our football team.

"As a retired player, Brett has the option to apply for reinstatement with Commissioner Goodell. If that were to occur, he would become an active member of the Green Bay Packers. As always, the Packers will do what’s right and in the best interest of the team.

"As with all Packers greats, Brett’s legacy will always be celebrated by our fans and the organization, regardless of any change in his personal intentions.

"Brett and Deanna will always be a part of the Packers family."
