Brewers get pitcher Sabathia

By Gazette Staff   July 6, 2008 - 6:50 p.m.

MILWAUKEE - The Brewers have won the C.C. Sabathia sweepstakes, and the Cleveland left-hander could pitch for Milwaukee as soon as Tuesday night against Colorado at Miller Park.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel is reporting that Milwaukee and Cleveland have reached a deal that will bring Sabathia to Milwaukee in exchange for Brewer minor league star Matt La Porta and two lower-level minor leaguers.

The deal reportedly is contingent on paperwork being done and medical records exchanged.

whybesad, we have tony gwynn jr. to take over center. and if the brewers do lose sabathia at the end of the year they get 2 first round picks. and scouting on laporta says he is a corner outfielder probably best suited for AL and as a DH.

NVgrf, your Cards have been doing it with smoke and mirrors, it won't keep up. Are they on their fourth or fifth closer so far this year? The Crew is taking a chance, but I'm sure you remember Rick Sutcliffe for the Cubs in '84, and Doyle Alexander for the Tigers in '87. They cost both teams a lot (Joe Carter, John Smoltz), but they each made it to the playoffs, because of the pick-ups. Now maybe if the Cards can get Stan the Man, and Bob Gibson back, they might be able to keep up.

Go White Sox!

Now all the Brewers have to do is trade Rickie Weeks for a bottle of pine tar and some sunflower seeds. Maybe Rickie could represent the NL at the All-Star game in the "Popping up with two outs with runners in scoring position" derby. That guy is and has always been horrible.

With C.C... the brewers go from pretender to contender. They went from a pretty good team to a very dangerous team. Now they can matchup with any starting rotation in the N.L.

The Brewers have never done anything, and never will. Next they will try to bring in Clemens and Bob Feller. Desperation breeds desperation. Post me again at the season's end!

Is it worth it to give up a great prospect that could be converted to another position. Maybe center field. Cammeron is getting old. Also, we aren't going to be able to sign both Sabitha and Sheets. We may loose both and a top prospect with no guarantees we will even contend. With a lack luster bullpen the playoffs may be a dream.

It will make them only a slightly better 3rd place team in the division. Go Cards!!

its not about re-signing either sheets or sabathia. worry about that nov 1. its about getting to the playoffs THIS YEAR. if we get there, good trade of course, if not, you know how it goes;), but the bottom line is we NEEDED to do this, if not for our team as much as to keep him off the cubbies roster....

LaPorta has a good bat but his defensive skills are horrible, hes better suited for an AL team in a DH role, his lack of defense in left field (an area where braun is signed through 2015) would not get him a starting role in the bigs any time soon barring injury. the only thing losing laporta is going to hurt is our Nashville team, he was a bat without a position.

Don't get to excited about this deal. If we can't resin him or sheets we are screwed. Giving up La Porta is going to sting us big time.

and a team good enough to justify a 'rental':) hes only here for the short term, but if he gets us to the playoffs.....the end will justify....:)

awesome. C.C. hasnt had the best year this year but we needed him. This is also great because it shows the brewers finally have management with the fortitude to pull the trigger to improve the team.
