Police: Stranger likely a salesman
The stranger who approached two children last week is likely a man selling encyclopedias door-to-door, Janesville Police Lt. Tim Hiers said this morning.
Police decided to “opt on the side of caution” when they issued a press release Thursday afternoon about a stranger approaching two children Saturday evening in the 2500 block of Clover Lane.
This morning, police interviewed the man they believe made contact with the children, Hiers said.
“At this point, it looks like it’s probably him,” he said.
The case still is open as police work to verify other information, he said.
Police also received multiple calls from residents about a man who matched the description who had been making sales stops door-to-door, he said.

They weren't selling encyclopedias, but rather text books that targeted parents, so they are able to understand the new way that core classes are being taught today. I live in the Clover Lane neighborhood, and have seen a couple of these salesmen, and according to the police officer who took my statement this morning, the City of Janesville did give them permission to sell. Sounds like one department not talking to another to me!

Does anybody still buy encyclopedias in this day and age...
We're trying to put a stop to those nagging companies calling and trying to sell sh** over the phone so why door-to-door thats even worse.

There is tremendous difference in response times depending on what you call in. If it's violent crime (anything from shots fired to somebody tossing a beer bottle at their mother -- and I stress these are REAL examples) they are generally there within 3 to 5 minutes. (And under Mahan there seems to be a policy for a much larger initial response to such calls, rather than letting one or two officers assess the situation and call for backup, as in the past.)
.
If it's something that has taken place and is over with like an automobile accident they will be prompt but not rushed. For other incidents such as burglary or loud partying in the street and so forth, obviously the priority level is lower.
.
In this particular case, it seems the reports were put out there because they had been unable to find this person to interview him, and the reports led them to him so they could rule out any criminal risk. Tough judgement call, but obviously you want to err on the side of caution.

Rockstars: I don't appreciate your statement "OR you have put yourself in a situation based on your own stupidity or negligence (which is infinitely more likely than the former)."
People are so quick to judge others on these posts it amazes me. You know nothing about me nor the situations however you own a crystal ball and are now better than me?? Who do you think you are?
If I must defend myself for my opinion the one time I needed the police dept. was because somebody pulled out in front of me which caused an accident (totalling my vehicle). The other time was when people were shooting guns in the middle of the night in our neighborhood. Now you tell me how either of these situations deems me stupid.
Now who's the stupid one???? I suggest you watch your comments about people.

I live in Janesville and have no problem criticizing JPD. When you call for an emergency and the dispatcher says they will send someone, what is the response time? It takes FOREVER for an officer to show up. I don't think that the actual officers are to blame but maybe the fact that we don't have enough uniformed officers in this city. Apparently, we can't afford them even though we have the money to piss away on an indoor aquatics facility. Who do we blame then? The police chief? The city manager? If that's the case, I blame both of them. I can't tell you how many times I've personally called 911 to report erratic driving or someone drinking a beer while they are driving, or any multitude issues to have no officer arrive. And before you flame me for criticizing JPD, don't be so quick to jump to their defense for "rescuing" you from some horrible predicament. Chances are if you are in a horrible predicament that requires an ARMED POLICE OFFICER, you have been unlucky enough to be a victim of a random crime (which is typically unlikely) OR you have put yourself in a situation based on your own stupidity or negligence (which is infinitely more likely than the former).

You never realize how many great agencies we have right here in our own backyard until you need them. As I said, the JPD does a great job & I am thankful they have been to my rescue a few times when I've needed them.
I also have to commend our County Health Dept. who has done a terrific job during this flooding situation. Anyone in the flood area they are doing water testing for only $2 for the s&h. And on Tuesday they had free tetanus shots.
We're lucky to have agencies & people like this in our community.
Be grateful for them instead of making them sound like the bad guys.

dvlgirl you are right. It just makes me angry to see someone constantly slamming an agency who's only purpose is to protect us. I think they do a great job.

I had a couple of teenage girls trying to sell me magazines about a month ago. First I thought they were from around here, but then I noticed the thick southern accents and asked if they were the door to door magazine sales that we have all heard about....remember the accident with the van? They said they were part of some group of kids with social anxiety problems and this was their "therapy". They were smooth talking and I sure didn't think they had any kind of social anxiety! They were out close to dark and they even asked to come in the house. I told them no to coming in and no to the magazines and sent them on their way. I called the police shortly after and apparently their "boss" had just picked them up and took them to their hotel. They were just 18 year old girls and innocent enough looking, but never let a stranger into your house....ever. What parent would let their girls do this kind of job? I guess if they're 18 they can do what they want if they're on their own, but geez....I think it's scary in this day and age.
Sorry, this didn't really have anything to do with the encyclopedia salesman, but there are still people going door to door and they don't sound very legit. Keep your eyes open and always remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it most likely is!

Glock19, don't give him the satisfaction of replying to his drivel. He's obviously a loser who doesn't have any friends, that's why he has so much free time to post 40+ times. Anyone who complains that much about everything has no idea what he's talking about. It must make him feel important to have his name in print. With you replying to him only leads him to believe there's someone out there who cares.

Ok, yesterday afternoon we had two young men come to our door, and we are WAY out in the country, questioning my teenage son about his intent on college. They said they were college recruiters. Now that I see this, I am a bit leary of their story. Since when do we recruit for college door to door?? Never heard of such a thing. If they come back, I will be taking license plate numbers and calling the police. YOU CAN NEVER BE TOO CAREFUL!!

tnimmo89,
I count 3 posts removed. 1)Guns, bones found in Lake Delton. Would have loved to read what you had to say about that one. You must not like the Police there either. 2) Hanging reported in Cemetary-time stamp 12:31. and 3) Hanging reported in Cemetary-time stamped 10:22. I can only imagine the sick stuff you said to be removed there. I suggest you go back to school and learn repect, grammer, and how to count. Now GO LAY DOWN!

This just sounds suspicious.
* I didn't even know there were door to door salespeople anymore. Let alone selling encyclopedia's. (I wouldn't want that job...who uses encyclopedia's anymore?)
* Why was he out at 9:00 at night?
* Why did he approach the children and not just to knock on the door if he was a salesperson?
Watch your children.

Those who think the JPD are so bad next time you need their help for anything don't call them! I hope you can do a better job yourself. I know several and they are wonderful people that do a terrific job. We should all be thankful there are people like them that are willing to risk their lifes for us. Thank you JPD.

I did a little research into tnimmo89's previous posts (40 of them to be exact) and you can really see a pattern. Most of the posts are ripping the Janesville Police, the Citizens of Janesville, and almost every story he/she reads in the Gazette. A lot of the posts had to be removed by Gazette staff). Do you have nothing else to do with your time than to interject your ignorant opinions on EVERYTHING that goes on in this town?? You don't even like Janesville, or it's citizens, so why do you pre-occupy yourself so much with what goes on here?? If you think you can do such a better job then run for city government.

I'm with the idea of banning all door to door salespeople! They use high pressure tactics. I had one at my door the other day and I had to say no several times as he produced page after page of Janesville residents and addresses claiming to be people who bought his educational product that he was selling. Granted I could have just shut my door, but I was trying to be nice about it. Then he wanted me to give out names of my neighbors, no way!
With that said, you'd think they would at least know better than to approach young children.

Glock19: I agree. This city/area has a way of ripping most public institutions. I think they actually believe they have more rights than they really do as tax payers.

I don't understand why if this was an issue, and the police were so worried about it, did they wait till Thursday to mention it. It happened Saturday. I would think that they would announce suspicious activity like that right away.

Wow, people in this town are so quick to rip the Janesville Police Dept. for anything. What is it with you people?? I am not a police officer but I am friends with several of them and they are nothing but professional and really good people. I would love to see you all strap on a gun and a badge and try to do what these people do for a living, for just one night! They are the first people you will call when the SHTF and the first people you will rip apart in this blog! Even though you offer them -0 respect, they will put their own lives on the line to rescue you. Given the same circumstances I bet you wouldn't.

so--------are all door -to-door salesmen "creeps"? these college kids coming through in the summer should be told "not to drive in vans". too dangerous. Maybe all door to door salesmen should be outlawed in Janesville.

If it's just a sales man looking for parents, or another creep, reguardless as a community we should be keeping an eye on our children. In reguards to making sure they are not abducted, or running around in "gangs", it is our responsibilty to guide them in the right direction. God knows we can not count on the JPD to keep us safe, or get anything done for that matter, so as a community we need to stand together, and keep these creeps out.

Does he have a seller's permit from the City of Janesville? This would solve many door to door sales people. Ask to see a seller's permit, if they do not have one, call the JPD and report them. They will go away fast if this isn't ligit.

Did JPD go overboard before investigating the issue? I think so. Why spend time investigating when you can just jump the gun (so to speak)?

What do you mean by the term "approached"? There seems to be more implied than the standard definition. Are there still encyclopedia salesmen? That seems suspicious to me.
