Work begins at Lake Delton

By Associated Press   June 21, 2008 - 9:52 a.m.

LAKE DELTON— Work began Friday on a temporary dam to prevent further erosion of Lake Delton. T he lake, which for decades has been one of the tourism draws of the Wisconsin Dells area, emptied into the Wisconsin River during severe flooding June 9 that tore a new channel through a sand embankment that formed part of the man-made lake’s shore.

Tom Diehl, a member of the Lake Delton Village Board, said the temporary dam will guide Dell Creek back to its natural channel, flowing from Mirror Lake to the Wisconsin River via a dam that did not fail when the flooding caused the breach in the shoreline.

A $160,000 grant from the federal Natural Resources Conservation Service is funding the temporary dam project.

Once Dell Creek is diverted from the breach back to the dam, workers will begin stabilizing the sides of the breach, angling the bank to stop erosion, Diehl said.

He estimated that work on the temporary dam should be completed by about next Wednesday.

That's what I thought. When you buy a license for a boat it goes to the DNR. I agree, why should we be paying to fund rebuilding a manmade lake for Tommy Bartlett to just profit from it again. I've said it before & I'll say it again...have Tommy Bartlett dip into his pocket to fund this!!

miltonalum-So everytime you pay license fees for anything (plates, hunting, fishing, etc..) you don't think that's a tax on you? Especially when the money gets raided by politicians for their "pet" projects or in Gov Doyle's case to balance the budget.

The conservation fund is money from the sale of licenses so, no tax dollars werent being used.

it's funny how a federal grant from the NATURAL Resources Conservation service was used to try to restore a manmade lake. Why should tax dollars be used? The local businesses and residents should pay for this themselves.
