Evansville adds room tax
Visitors staying at Evansville’s new hotel set to open this summer will pay a 7 percent room tax.
The city council voted tonight to start the room tax.
The tax will be a new revenue source for the city but must be used to market the city and attract people to the area, City Administrator Dan Wietecha said.

I was wrong. Of course, you will never hear a politician admit the same. *** Dan is not the mayor; but Sandy is. Yes, I was hasty in commenting.
But note the following:
The crushing plant is still a go, for now, but the Biodiesel Facility is not. Personally, I don't think crushing plant probably will be far behind. In my opinion, the entire process wasnt thought through.
"Gosh! Biodiesel. Everyone is running out to get some. Every diesel vehicle produced for consumer use can run on it right now! No conversion! Manufacturers are recommending it! Ford, Chrysler, GM... all of them? There's even a national standard for biodiesel!" And Evansville is poised to overtake Saudi Arabia, Texas, even Alaska!(Yeah, right!)
Let's also not forget our current civic improvements; rolling along at a staggering pace!*** The Lake! The Park! When will that be completed?!? Probably about the same time we get a HWY 14 Bypass.
Come-on! Nobody honestly saw this coming? We need to step back and think things through, and think small.
And as for a new Mayor and/or city council, last time I checked, my door bell still worked. You're welcome to swing by any time and discuss your vision for Evansville's future. I may even offer you dinner.

struggling to keep up with 'explosive growth".
Really what are the stats for the last five years. The growth in EVILLE has slowed over the last two years. Fixing the lake, The library, have nothing to do with 'explosive' growth. They are things that can wait. The sewer plant is a priority.
You don't live here so you don't know how it is run. It's run poorly. As for running for Mayor I may or my neighbor plenty of talk about it among people in town. Whom ever the next mayor is has to be someone who will not bankrupt the town with foolish ideas and the inability to say NO>.

Just so you know Dan is not the Mayor of Evansville, he is the City Admin. Gets your facts right before you write rude comments.

whoa...maybe it's me but I thought everyone with an education knew that hotel/motel/inn's charged local room tax, that goes to the city that it is located in.
I am not from Evansville but I do know that it's not the worst managed city, but a city struggling to keep up with an explosive growth rate, due to people moving out of "the big City of Madison".
"rims" if you don't like the way its run why don't you run for Mayor.....

Wow! Comments are fun! So are facts.
1) The article says that the room tax will go to promote Evansville as a destination for business and pleasure.
2) Room taxes are often used so that local residents' tax rates are not raised to pay for these promotions.
3) Dan isn't the mayor.
4) The soybean crush plant is still on track for completion.
5) Midwest soy oil doesn't go to China. You might be thinking of soy sauce which is brewed in Walworth County. But most of Kikkoman's output stays in the US as well.

I always though Evansville was more of a Bed & Breakfast sort of place. Maybe the Chinese will stay at the hotel when they come by to see where their soy oil is made.

Oh and Dan; this will be your last term as Mayor! You'd better start looking for work elsewhere.

Now that the soybean crushing plant will not be a reality, Evansville's one and only hotel will be "belly-up" before it even opens!

rims...Being overcharged by business and for housing and taxes is, I believe, the price you pay for small town living. Plus, you get the added bonus of everyone knowing your business! I'll stay away just because of that!

Now, Now what ever will Evansville do with this 7% per tax?? They are very good at raising taxes but not at lowering them. It should go into a fund towards drawing more business to town. However I sure they will find a way to piddle it away. Evansville is one of the worst run towns ever.
Stay away. Unless you like over paying for your house, paying the second highest taxes in the county, having city government waste your money, being over charged for at business's in town. Now if thats what you like come on over

Some places the room tax is 14%. I am not sure what Janesville's is, but for some reason 11% comes to mind. Part of the room tax for Janesville goes to the cities general fund but a lot of it goes to the Janesville Area Convention & Visitors Bureau. So 7% doesn't sound like that much.

does this apply to the hourly rate as well? This is on top of a sales tax I'm taking it. Wouldn't it be a better to draw people to the hotel with cheaper rates? I guess not..
