UW Badgers make big bucks

By Associated Press   June 6, 2008 - 8:20 p.m.

MADISON — Wisconsin men’s basketball coach Bo Ryan was given a $225,000 salary increase Friday after a highly successful seventh season in Madison.

Ryan’s boss, athletic director Barry Alvarez, was also given a $150,000 pay raise by the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents.

Ryan, 60, will earn a $1.175 million salary during the year that starts July 1, up from $950,000, according to regents documents. Alvarez will earn $750,000, up from $600,000. Both of their salaries come from athletic department revenue and private funds, not tax dollars.

The university's new chancellor, Carolyn “Biddy” Martin, will earn $437,000 when she takes over Sept. 1.

If the athletic department has this amount of money, taxpayers and students should be appalled that EVERY year for the past four years, tuition has increased approximately 5-6%. This money should be distributed so students who want an education will be able to afford one. Remember, this years 5.5% increase only affects tuition and does not address the fact that room and board is increased every year as well.

Actually all athletics at the school make up their own financing, so you cannot complain that the academics don't make as much because they are getting paid by the state. Everything the athletic department does is their OWN funding- they are not going to give their money to academics like academics is not going to give their money to athletics.

Athletic department salaries come from a mixture of money earned by the department and private funds, not tax dollars.

Wish I could make that much more a year than MY boss. Heck that would make going to work all the more worth wild.

Makes you wonder why we needed a 5.5% increase in tuition at all of the 4 year universities through out the state. Apparently the athletic department has money to burn. Go figure!

I don't think that calling someone an idiot because they do not agree with you qualifies as an honest opinion.

The Board of Regents approved these "raises." Mind you, this is also the SAME board who approved to RAISE tuition yet AGAIN!
.
And people are complaining that some in Janesville make more than others for doing "less" work. But, yet, others are saying it's a capitalist society and if you don't like then move. Amazing how well the someone else's shoe fits when it's on "your" different sized foot.
.
This is un-"bo"-lievable

Gazette Staff, this may be the basis of an interesting story. What to Professors at UW make in comparable positions with head coaches? Directors of Departments, research leads, Nobel Prize winners, that lot, not the new, associate Professors. Thanks!

And by the way stacey...please point out in my post where I stated that the coaches and AD didn't deserve that money.
.
It just happens that I believe the academic side deserves more.
.
I'm waiting...IDIOT?

Stacey.... who's the idiot?
.
If you think no tax dollars are going into their salaries.....YOU are it.
.
Again.. it's no wonder we're in such a mess.

If taxes have to support capitalism, as I said, "no one should be surprised why this country is in such a mess."

That's good in theory, but keep my tax dollars out of it.

I suggest that packrat, SarahB, and wisconsinheat move to Cuba, North Korea, or Burma. If you don't like capitalism then move. The market pays what the market demands.

And to think that their double-cheeseburger at McDonald's costs the same $1 as mine is just not right!
