Janesville GM buyout number over 450

By Steve Benton ( Contact )   May 20, 2008 - 1:09 p.m.

From the WCLO newsroom:

JANESVILLE — The list of Janesville GM employees ready to take the latest buyout offer reached 453 Tuesday morning according to UAW local 95 President, Brad Dutcher. He says he expects the number to grow to at least 500 by Thursday, the deadline. Employees would then have another week before the list is official.

Anyone wishing to get on the list will need to sign up in the personnel office.

The company has decided to eliminate the second shift at the Janesville plant which will result in the loss of 750 jobs.

No, Noggi....I meant the "real world" as in: People with Bachelors in Psych don't have a place to work, and they are managers at Wal-greens. You can't make the money you need at those jobs, but you CAN make it at GM, or at least you used to be able to.

Did I say it was much better off today? No I said it has improved over the years. Learn to read. Give me a break about the crimes and shootings. Crime is a part of every city, btw you must have missed this article;

Your right on one part, Ken Hendricks did help tremendously but all it takes is the right person to change things. Janesville will soon need someone like that I fear.

By the way, I DO own a business here & I've already seen the effects...That means, no raises to those who deserve, no bonuses, no buying lunch once a week, ect...That means start to hoard those checks from the great govt. that allowed all these jobs to go over seas!!! It means much more then hurtful words on here and I Pray for everyone thats hurting from this!!!!

How can you say that Beliot is much better off today? There is more crime and shootings then here. Ken Hendricks is the one that did most of the improvments there and now unfortunitly he's gone. To say that not everyone in some way will feel the ill effects of this WHOLE COMMUNITY is abusolutly crazy...Do you understand there are over 1000 people that are losing their job...X families they support, that pay for shoes for sports, extra activities for school, put money in the Salvation Army buckets at Christmas, so those of you that can't give your kids a Christmas like their kids get, will have a better one!! Who do you think's gonna be able to do that now? How about the taxes that are gonna be the same but the cost of a home is gonna go down, when these people move, guess who gets to keep paying the taxes to make up for it? Every business in this town and close surrounding ones are gonna be affected in aome way or another...IF, you live in Janesville and think that you know on one that will be effected for the worst, then you must live in a bubble and don't talk to ANYONE...

To "justmythought"
Thank you!!!!!!!! I am going to be out of a job because of GM going to one shift. I have worked at Lear for 11 years and I have watched as my co workers are stressing over this, some of these workers that are loosing their jobs have been there for 15+ years. Unlike GM we are not being offered a buyout nor severance. Some of these people are 50+ years old. What are they to do now?
To ALL THE BASHERS!!! Please think before you speak. Some of these people have made due with what they had in life and were given the opportunity to work and be paid well for it. Dont bash them because you didnt get the same.
To all my fellow workers and friends.
Keep your head up high and hopefully things will turn around. I am going to miss working with all of you, We spent so much time together you are like my second family. Best wishes to you all.
Ignore the BASHERS with any luck misfortune will hit them too and then they will see what its like when the shoe is on the other foot.

Squid40naple said "Just take a look to the south at Beloit after all their big plant closings."

Not sure if you meant this in a good or bad way but yes, take a look at Beloit. It was once the Industrial town back in the day much like Janesville is today and it has survived just fine after the Corp closed. Within the last 10 years it has improved vastly.
With the economy the way it is, it's just a matter of time before GM closes the plant here. There will defiantly be some hard times ahead for lots of people but just like Beloit, the people and town will survive.

Not all GM workers sit on their butts all day..those that actually work have to do their work and that of the "slackers"

As for how the area is going to be affected, I hate to think of how many marriages will end in divorce over finances or lack thereof. It is just a sad situation no matter how you look at it!

shdow5, Are you serious, carbon footprint? If you are so worried about that lie of man made global warming, I have a suggestion, just shrivel up and die. Afterall, if you really believe that man has that much of an impact on the weather, that is your only real solution.

>>>>some of the people working next to him have Bachelor and Master degrees in many different fields. They just can't make the money in the real world<<<<<

Meaning a GM job is not "real world"? But then a Bachelor`s degree is merely High School warmed over.

The fact of the matter is gravy trains rarely last forever. While GM was riding high in the 1970s the union got greedy, and management did anything it could to appease the line workers to keep the cash cow ringing. Time has come to pay the piper. The question is how will Janesville recover from this? With good paying jobs being lost, home values will plummet, and when that happens your tax base will go down. When the taxes being collected go down, so does the quality of schools and governmental services. Just take a look to the south at Beloit after all their big plant closings. I guess my family and I got out of Janesville the right time a couple of years ago. My wife and I would laugh and shake our heads at all the people who would say ignorant things like, "I can care less if GM closes, I don't work there and it won't affect me." Time will tell on that.

With no second shift at Janesvilles GM plant there will be some positives and negatives. Our carbon signature as a community will be reduced as well as the noise pollution, but those supporting industries and businesses will have to bear the blunt force blow of a big reduction in profit which will ultimitly result in a few more bread winners out of jobs and more misery for more households. Can Janesville endure? Will the city council and its support groups be able to muster up the strength to somehow turn this into an economic opportunity? Or Did we carry all our eggs in one basket and tripped?

Janesvillehero? More like villain! That is the dumbest thing I've heard someone say. My father works for GM, and some of the people working next to him have Bachelor and Master degrees in many different fields. They just can't make the money in the real world to support themselves, so they have to turn to a place that actually pays employees for their hard work and sacrifices. Think before you speak.

"put in their place"?? There are a lot of people that work at GM that know exactly how lucky they are to have a job there and are very grateful. This is just really sad. Not only for General Motors employees, but also for every employee that is losing their job because of it. (Lear, LSI, Woodbridge, etc.) I pray for all of you and your families.

I hate to admit it, but it's actually going to be nice to finally see most these overpaid workers finally get put in their place. I say bring it on and let's see how well this town can stand as this relic of a auto plant begins to fall apart and fade away. The youth of this town will be forced to consider college or worthwhile careers, without the lure of droning away in an auto plant as their goal after high school.
