A new way to get books

By Stacy Vogel ( Contact )   May 9, 2008 - 10:04 a.m.

My friend, Cathy Idzerda, showed me a press release about a new book exchange Web site, Novel Action. I'm intrigued.

It looks to me like a kind of Netflix for books. You pay $25 a year, and then you send books you don't want anymore to the site. For each book, you get a "book buck" that you use to get a book someone else has sent in. Then you just keep exchanging the books as you finish them. You also have the option to keep the book.

I'd kind of like to do this, except I don't want to part with any of my books. Also, there's a shipping charge, though it's a flat rate -- $4.80 for up to six pounds of books. But maybe I'll give it a try.

Has anyone else tried an exchange like this? What did you think?

I like this site. It looks like they have a nice selction, the shipping is cheap and because I don't have to wait for someone else to pick my books before I order.

I recommend PaperBack Swap (www.paperbackswap.com). It's free to join, and when you list 7 books you want to get rid of to your bookself, you get 3 credits to start with. When someone requests a book from you and you send it you get another credit. You use your credits to request books from other members. It works great, it's for all books (not just paperback). You can send your books media mail, so it's cheaper when you're sending just one or two books. You can also purchase and print out the postage right from the website if you want, or you can take them to the post office if you prefer. It's a fabulous site!

Judging by the books available on the site, I'd say keep your money. It's not MUCH money, but most of the books available are the exact sort HPL regularly orders for its patrons. For me, the value of joining something like NETFLIX is that it has so much more obscure titles that aren't available at Blockbuster. In this case, I'd be interested in a club whose members exchanged more obscure titles. THEN it might be worthwhile. But as long as HPL has Interlibrary Loan at a good price, even then it doesn't seem worth it. Why pay to borrow books? This might be a good business model for someone who lives outside of Janesville and doesn't have the benefit of this library. Every time I leave Janesville, I spend more time ordering books from OTHER libraries and find next to nothing at my main branch. Keep this in mind if you move away someday, but for now, stick with what you've got (and hit up Half-Price Books and Frugal Muse in Madison when you want to keep a book and have it be a bargain).
