Bond set in car-stunt case
JANESVILLE -- A signature bond was set Monday afternoon for the Parker High School student charged in the accident that severely injured a schoolmate Friday night.
Jason T. Klein, 17, of 1237 S. Arch St., Janesville, did not enter a plea in court to the charge of reckless driving causing injury.
Klein also is prohibited from driving until the case is settled or his bond conditions are amended. His next court date has not yet been scheduled.
Klein was driving a sport-utility vehicle in the large parking lot at the northwest corner of Center and Kellogg avenues in Janesville on Friday night when Nathan Rosenow, 16, Janesville, jumped in and on the vehicle in two separate stunts, according to the criminal complaint against Klein.
Rosenow fell off the vehicle during the second stunt and suffered skull fractures and severe brain trauma.

My son went through the same thing , but he wasn't car surfing he had sat on the hood of a friends car after school in 2000, car not running, his friend turned it on and took off, my son kept telling him to stop but he didnt and my son had nothing to hang on to so when the kid came to a stop sign going about 25mph my son flew off and hit the pavement , to this day my son does not remember falling off only screaming for him to stop. My son has had 5 eye surgerys for retina's since this has happened and has no lens in his left eye. I am very GREATFUL that is all the damage he recieved. But it could've been much worse.Thank GOD he is ok today.I really do think these kids need a place to hang out!!(The kid driving didn't get any punishment!)

I feel sorry for these kids involved and their familys, kids should know better but dont think about what could happen.I also agree there is nothing in Janesville for kids to do anymore, atleast we use to have the dry bars and the circuit to hang out at and be with friends now theres NOTHING.

Why should the city have to create all these things for kids to do? And even if they did, there is no guarantee the kids will take advantage of it. The city didn't own Skatin place, and how long was it for sale? If you think it should have stayed open, then why didn't you buy it? It doesn't matter how many things you give kids to do, they are gonna do what they want, and unfortunatly, they are going to make serious mistakes sometimes. As for thinking the cops should have patroled the parking lot better, someone made the same assumption about the cemetary when there was a death there. Do you really think Janesville can afford a cop on every street corner? I have a great idea, since there are so many kids with nothing to do, and so few cops, why not enroll every kid in the police acadamy, then both problems would be solved.
When my kids tell me they are bored, I tell them it's because they choose to be bored. There are endless things for kids to do, but if it doesn't cost the parent an arm and a leg for their kids to do it, the kids aren't interested.

Happy2, perhaps you didn't see surf the Internet or rent DVDs/videogames. Maybe you would be happy with a Penny's Daycare Center for Teens.

JSM..what century are you living in when you say that kids have plenty to do in Janesville. Read a book? Go to the gym or the YMCA? They should have a place to 'hang' out, some kind of club, but I know the old farts in this town would never allow that.

i feel sorry for both of these familys...and the comments about why dont they have a club for teenagers to go to, they do its called Weslys...and i personally feel that all the kids that were there that night are just as much at fault then the two boys that did the stunt...they should have stopped it instead of just sitting there making the comments about how come he put his feet down...i mean come on all these kids new it was a bad idea to do this, but yet not one tried to stop it until the boy fell off...its sad to see the kids now doing this kind of stuff even more, when they know how dangerous it can be...i hope the boy fully recovers, and has a better life...

I completely agree with beenthere. There are plenty of things for teens to do, like read library books, rent DVDs and video games, surf the Internet, go to the gym or YMCA, get a job, bowl at the El-Ra, study so that you remain consistently on the honor roll, etc. Car surfing occurs all over, so the arguments of not enough to do just don't add up. While I feel sympathetic to these individuals given the magnitude of the injury, they do need to take some personal responsibility for their actions. Likely, auto and/or homeowners insurance will be invoked, though the intentional acts exclusion will likely apply. All the comments that there should have been police/security are absurd. Do you want to pay higher taxes or reallocate the police force from fighting domestic violence/drug crime so that every parking lot/desolate area can be monitored to prevent a foolish individual from making bad choices? It's an impossible proposition.

I feel horrible for all the family and the boys that are suffering because this is a very tragic event...but I think that danias is right...there were two boys at fault here...he jumped in the window and on the hood...BOTH boys were being stupid...Maybe the best punishment for them would be to go around and talk to students about the dangers of car surfing. I remember the driver in the accident at Riverside had to come and talk to us at Marshall right after it happened and I think it really made an impact on students because we haven't heard about anything like this since then...and yes, Janesville we need to find something that will attract our youth like a under 18 dance club or something because idol hands are the devil's playground.

My heart and prayers go out to Nathan and his family. My nephew Jason was driving. This is another tragic event about kids and car-surfing. My ex-wife knew Matt Floyd. It was big news about kids and car-surfing. Then the topic disappeared. I dont know if this is brought up in drivers ed. or not. It certainly should be. Both these boys are good kids who "both" made a tragic choice.

My question is where was the police. They said they know this is a hangout place for kids (bowling alley)and they know they do this stunting in the big parking lots, so why don't they patrol the areas more heavily. As for the kid who was driving. I think he deserves to be punished but not to servely because of what it could do to him for the rest of his life. As for the kid in the hospital I hope he comes out of it this healthy and more wise and after he has healed up that the law punishes him the same as the kid that was driving.

lkc1123 If it upset you oh'well. It's life and yes I do feel sorry for his family. I've been there on this type of inncident I saw what happens to both sides in the 90's. I hope in the drivers story he doesn't get full punshment because two boys were involve not one! Maybe people now will have a reality check that kids need activies to do city counsel should look into a place for kids to do using a school id to get in so no outsiders can get in so they can have safe Fun!

i agree, the other boy is being punished, he is fighting for his life. im sure his family did not enjoy reading that comment, this was not the place to put such a comment or the time. compassion should be shown. im sure young mr. klien will punish himself, far more than the courts. this young man is probably devasted for what has happened. my prayers and thoughts will be of both families.

Why do people think that children need some place special to go to or always need to be entertained? Where are their parents? What about doing home work, volunteering, getting a job, going to a movie, hanging out with your friends or family. Although it is easier to blame someone or somebody else!

danias, "I feel both boys should be punish not just the driver" How is Nathan Not being punished? He's lying in bed fighting for his life and to see that, and then read your comment makes me sick. I really don't understand how some people can say such stupid things.

it is tragic what happened, but it does show that our kids dont have alot to do, so they play dumb games like this.
or they run around with guns. seems like our city or state should pay more attention to kids. find some thing for them to do. other than run the streets.
it may be to late for the older kids (that are to old for that) but i have a younger child i hope this town of nothing for kids to do, wakes up!!

I know the boy who is now fighting for his life. He reminded me of my son in many ways. I spoke to my son about this tragic event. His response was "well that was just a stupid thing to be doing!" A good response, but I told him, sometimes kids think 'they are invincable, they can not get hurt.' It only takes 1 moment of bad judgement, accompanied by peer pressure, and your life can change forever, or be over. in this case 2 young lives have been changed forever. I really hope teens will learn a valuable lesson from this tragedy. It may save a few lives.

I feel both boys should be punish not just the driver.I read that Nathan was on the honor roll so doesn't he realize his actions were just as dumb as Jason. Its not like the other kid was handcuff to the car he was the one that jump on the vehicle in two separate incidents. I just can't believe kids are still doing this I remember when a kid died from this in the early 90's. There need to be somewhere young kids in this town can do I wished there was a club like other towns do for kids ranging 7-12th grade where they can have fun and be safe instead there driving the strip or being reckless in parking lots hello people don't you think this is a good wake up call?

I cant believe the driver didnt realize how dangerous this is.. There are laws about driving for a reason, so people dont get hurt.. I think we really need to take a look at out drivers ed courses.. Do kids really learn what they need to, to be able to be good drivers.. I think not! If they dont even lear how dangerous things like this can be how can we count on them to know how to drive..

What's sad is the fact that the driver was too stupid to know how dangerous his actions were. He deserves whatever the law gives him.
