Edgerton School Board supports pledge reading

By Stacy Vogel ( Contact )   April 29, 2008 - 5:52 a.m.

The Edgerton Board of Education received an education itself Monday night during a debate about saying the Pledge of Allegiance in Spanish.

Speakers lectured on military history, the definition of “patriotism,” the state of the War on Terror and even the language of the Bible as they argued why Edgerton High School students should or should not be allowed to recite the pledge in Spanish over the intercom.

The controversy started in March after Edgerton High School allowed students from a Spanish class to say the pledge in Spanish over the intercom. Normally, the pledge is recited over the intercom in English each morning.

The school board expressed satisfaction with the compromise Monday night after hearing nearly an hour and a half of debate. They voted unanimously to affirm Halberg’s decision and leave the subject in the hands of administrators.

thank you to fisherman for showing that not all vets are as arrogant and ignorant as the ones who made such a xxxx of them selves.

Good enough to fight for our country, good enough to say the Pledge in Spanish, German, what ever language you like.

Thank you again.

I am a veteran and I am embaressed that other members of the VFW are opposed to the Pledge of Allegiance recited in spanish since our most recent wars have been fought by an increasing number of Hispanics under the American Flag. The have earned the right to have the Pledge of Allegiance spoken in spanish.

Whether it's in English or Spanish, at least the Pledge of Allegiance is being recited. In the Janesville Schools I attended it was rarely recited.

School is a learning enviroment. These were just kids saying the pledge. Showing off what they had learned.

Then we have some guy come in and try to tell the school how it should be run.

If you want more say in what your kids are exposed to then put them in a private school.

I for one am glad for all the different cultures my kids are and can be exposed to.

They are both taking spanish class. My daughter has taken spanish all three years in high school so far.

I am proud of our school district and the board for the stand they took. Really it was just common sense.

I wish I would have learned how to speak spanish in high school. I have taken a class since high school for work related reasons.

What was the comment about erosion about?

Sounds racist to me.

As if this person is saying all down hill from here.

Curtain call , is not stating that English is the superior lanuage or that whites are superior from what I read. They are saying some people seem to think English is the superior lang, and whites think they are superior.

This guy from Milton thinks he is superior. I feel sorry for his kids.

How many men and woman of mexican heritage are fighting in iraq right now. For America? How many have died?

This guy should be ashamed of himself. I would never want to be next to him in combat. He def. has issues with race.

Good enough to die for our country but not say the pledge in spanish? Please.

It does not matter what color or lanuage you speak. If you know the Pledge. Say it proudly.

curtain call radical racism. Wow. The only one who has hinted as racism is eb. erosion?

Please. For some reason some people think the only way to say the Pledge is in English . and that is a bunch of crap.

I don't care what lanuage anyone says the pledge in as long as they can say it. They know the words.

If you had followed previous posts on this yes it was mentioned. In previous articles.

Americans are proud of there heritage? Then they should be glad to see other people taking a PROUD interest in America by knowing the words to the Pledge and saying it proudly.

unless you are living in musixstrings world. Point and case right there.

Does not matter what color or lanuage you speak.

WOW!
Sounds like some of the posters (Don Diego, curtiancall) have gone to the Rev. Wright church of radical racism.

Was it ever suggested that English was a more suprior language? Or that "white Americans" thinks of themselves to be a "superior race"?

Building up a straw man, and then tearing it down is a technique often used to manipulate the truth, and pursuade the ignorant.

That fact is most Americans love their heritage, and do not want to see it trampled on. And as of a matter of fact...Yes America (even with all of it's faults) is still the greatest country on the face of the earth!

Be thankful that some students ("superior white" students??) would take enough interest to learn a second laguage.

What erosion? Is English the superior language? Manifest destiny at its finest.

The erosion began when white America's took it upon them self to think they are the superior race.

That they of all people have the right to judge others.

Be glad for anyone who knows the words to the pledge.

This was a group of kids..who are enjoying learning a second language , one that will serve them well in life.

It is interesting that before reading this little article, I got a totally different take on the story from the local Janesville radio station.

Seems they left out that it was the students of a Spanish Class saying the pledge. Once again, ya can only believe half of what you hear coming from the media...

Don_Diego: I agree completely. I have seen Norm (the superintendant) act rationally in heated situations several times. Thanks to Norm and the School Board for bringing reason to this situation.
