Council votes to open Riverside Park road, pool, bathrooms
JANESVILLE--The Janesville City Council voted to open the upper road, wading pool and north bathroom facilities in Riverside Park at its meeting Monday night.
The votes brought rounds of applause and a standing ovation from dozens of supporters of the park who attended and spoke at the meeting.
Friends of Riverside Park have been pushing to reopen both the pool and Parkhill Drive for more than two years to help revitalize one of the city’s most beautiful parks.
Rowdy behavior forced the city to close the road in 1996, and the pool was closed in 2002 to save money.

Big mistake! Now keep a watchful eye on the police reports for the vandalism that will start to take place on the golf course. That happened on a continual basis before the road closed and will now take place again that it is open. Big mistake!

All I have to say is WHY?

MikeF - as far as I know we have no Friends of Lustic Park or Palmer Park or any other park advancing an agenda like the Friends of Riverside have advanced to our Council.
I walk both worlds - I golf and I use that park all the time. I bet the people making decisons last nite for the City do neither. Our City Manager is so clueless he's against the pool opening because it floods every year?! If you are a park user, have you seen this pool flooded? Ever?
I hope this all works out. It just seems a park should also be a place to really enjoy everything without dodging vehicles in confined spaces which is what Park View Rd is. By the way, if you find any Pro V1's up there - they're mine!

I have been known to whack a few off line on occasion. Bouncing one off a vehicle may get it back in play!
But I am bummed that I could walk this area for some exercise alone or with my dog, meet other people doing the same thing and now that is gone.
The Afton Road bicycle / dog area is the only other area that offers that type of experience and that is pretty muddy if not underwater right now.
The pool & the bathrooms are just great - good for Friends of Riverside. I'm in a biz that sees liability issues at every turn & Park View Rd has 2 turns and & 2 hills. Write it down - trouble will happen with this road and when road upkeep is needed which is now, who's footing the bill?

wedgewacker- using your gloom and doom prediction, why don't we just close off the whole park to traffic completely. And while we are at it let's close all the parks. And how about the entire city, that way there will not be any litter or vandalism or any other nasty stuff. Yeah, that is not reasonable.
The road is opening, there is no stopping it. Now it is up to the community as a whole to ensure the situation(s) that caused the road to be closed in the first place never return to Riverside Park.

Thank you, Friends of Riverside Park and members of the City Council. You have done a great service to the people of Janesville by saving this gem of a park. Let's proceed thoughtfully so we don't find ourselves in this position again. Yay, the park will be saved!

Wow. I'm amazed no one has been able to enjoy the view since 1996. Ever try using your legs? What a great place it USED to be to WALK up, enjoy the quiet & solitude of a nice area while taking the time to notice the trees and vegetation.
Now you can share it with crotch rockets, cars, SUV's, no parking, fast food garbage and the inevitable vandalism.
Cudo's for the pool and the bathrooms... long overdue... but opening that road to today's traffic ... it's only a matter of time before something bad happens.

Finally a City Council that will promote taking care of what we already have. Bravo to them, and to the Friends for their tireless work restoring that park. There is still much work to be done - send them your donation!

I would like to say thanks to Pam Van brocklin who is a tireless supporter of this park. The efforts of all these people at the meeting are also to be commended. The council also gets my vote for having the wisdom and power to put this park back together. There is one more thing that needs to be done , and that is to create the road that belongs between the pool and the ball diamond to complete the drive through in the lower area. That was a great place to stop and catch some shade in the late afternoons. Thanks to all !

That's great news. The road never should have been closed in the first place. They used the actions of a few punks as an excuse to deprive the entire city of full use of Riverside Park for 12 years.

It high time we restore and enjoy the existing wonderful features of our city. I would haave preferred to see the road opened on a limited basis due to its condition, and to be able to enjoy it for walking and biking.

WOOHOO...I have great memories from that park. I was "courted" by my current husband while we took walks up the back road and sat on the bench near the golf course overlooking the park! This is a beautiful area and will be enjoyed by many.
