Hedberg Library Director hopes security upgrades will prevent thefts

An upgrade in security should help Hedberg Public Library prevent its high number of DVD thefts.
Executive Director Bryan McCormick says the library wants to use radio frequency identification to prevent the thefts instead of plastic casings called "safers". In addition to the cost of the DVDs, each plastic safer costs four dollars. McCormick says the staff finds two to three safers broken every week. That adds up to up to 150 DVDs taken every year.
The library lists its security upgrade as part of its capital projects.

It is ridiculous that some people go to a FREE library, where they have the benefit of reading and viewing new material Free for a couple weeks, and decide they STILL want to steal. I wonder if the radio frequency id will be a better cost than the 'safers'. With community awareness on this topic, what will librarians do if there is reported suspicious behavior? I don't recall seeing a security guard there to deal with issues like this or inappropriate behavior.
