Truck crashes into Dane County home

By Stacy Vogel ( Contact )   March 29, 2008 - 11:36 a.m.

A Dane County homeowner got a scare early this morning when a truck crashed into a house in the Pleasant Springs township, causing $100,000 damage.

Brian E. Swenson, 44, Stoughton, was driving on Pleasant Street at 12:53 a.m. when he failed to negotiate a curve and crashed into a home in the 2100 block of River Estate Lane, according to a news release from the Dane County Sheriff's Office.

Swenson, who was wearing a seatbelt, was treated and released at Stoughton Hospital. He was arrested on a charge of driving while intoxicated and cited with failure to maintain control and possession of drug paraphernalia. It was reported as his fourth arrest on a drunken driving charge.

The house sustained extensive damage to the living room, kitchen, bathroom, and structural floor support system.

Alcohol AGAIN Even if he would have killed someone he wouldn't get what he deserves, just like Miss Young after killing Dr. Poorman

You know taking this person's, or any person who is a habitual drunk driver, license away will not stop them from driving. It will only give them one more thing to get a ticket for when they get their next DUI or DWI. I think there should be a 3 strikes and your out policy for people who drive drunk. I know a number of people who have been caught multiple times drinking and driving and they think it is a joke. Stiffer penalties would make it less of a laughing matter to them, I am sure!

My friends daughter is 31, she's on her 3rd DWI in Jan. She had her hearing and it looks like she will be on an ankle braclet (which she's been on before & obviously it didn't work). She stands with two beers in one hand and drinking the third, a real cute sight. I just don't get it. You and I will be in jail after having a glass of wine with dinner and this little lady gets out of everything except the $$fine and a ankle bracelet. I thought Wisconsin was supposed to be coming down hard on drunk drivers? Not from what I've seen! I think they just like to rake in the fines. I personally want to see a lot more Jail Time!!

It is a priveledge to drive, not a God given right, or one that all citizens be given. I wonder when he will kill someone, other than himself? Will it be his 6th time? 8th time? At the age of 44, you are who you are, and he has obviously not gotten the idea yet. I doubt he had insurance, those poeple will now have to have their insurance company pay for the damages, and their rates will go up as they try to sue a guy for $100,000, when he couldn't pay a fraction of that for insurance. So who pays for this, we all do. A guy like this should only be allowed to use public transportation and never drive again. I would hate to be on the road when he is back behind the wheel, after celebrating his promotion to assistant fry cook.

By the fourth DWI CONVICTION, it is obvious the person has a problem which Ann Landers-style "counseling" isn't going to fix. The penalty should be a mandatory year of state prison time followed by twenty years mandatory reporting to the local court-designated location for mandatory Disulfiram (Antabuse) injections and random periodic mandatory blood test for alcohol and drugs. Failure to appear for injections gets more prison time.
