Butler, Gableman spar in Supreme Court debate

By Associated Press   March 28, 2008 - 8:34 p.m.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) – Supreme Court challenger Michael Gableman is accusing Justice Louis Butler of being a "judicial activist" during his four years on the high court. Butler says Gableman is just sending signals to groups supporting him that he will rule in their favor, which is inappropriate for any judge.

The comments came during the two candidates’ final debate before Tuesday’s election for a 10-year seat on the high court.

Butler was appointed to the court by Governor Jim Doyle in 2004 and is trying to fend off a challenge from Gableman, a Burnett County judge.

During a contentious debate televised on Wisconsin Public Television, the two sparred over their judicial philosophies, their backgrounds and their campaign tactics.

Wisconsin Manufactures And Commerce already put Justice Ziegler on the Supreme Court last campaign. Justice Butler has done a fine job with many, many years of experience.
