Beer depot license relinquished

By Mike DuPre'   March 26, 2008 - 7:40 a.m.

The owner of a defunct, and often burglarized, liquor store has relinquished his alcohol-selling license.

Kirit Sura of Crystal Lake, Ill., gave up the liquor license for Super Beer Depot, 1621 W. Court St., on Thursday as planned, Deputy Police Chief Steve Kopp said Tuesday.

And police made another arrest in what they think were multiple burglaries March 16-17.

Patrick J. Knilans, 17, of 6047 Highway 51, Janesville, was arrested Friday. He was charged with burglary and misdemeanor theft.

Since Jan. 1, 2007, Super Beer Depot was burglarized at least 11 times. Police think it was burglarized at least three times Sunday and Monday, March 16-17.

Is this what the Janesville Gazette has lowered its self to? The online Janesville Gazette is now more like a Jerry Springer show than a credible news source. I believe in welcoming public opinions, but the comments section on each story has become nothing more than an opportunity for every uneducated lowlife who strongly believes that he or she has something to say that can benefit the community. Some comments are legit, however most simply want their five minutes of fame buy chiming in with uneducated comments or slamming comments towards others when they have no idea what they are talking about. Is this what we want from our local news source?

No offense taken at all, mytake4u. That's exactly the type of interaction I was hoping to find. We just disagree about some of the issues. But it doesn't mean we have to take it to localboy's level of going after other posters. I wouldn't want everyone to hold the same opinions as myself. By leaving my comments I became involved on some level and expected responses to appear. It just seemed he/she goes after others, whereas instead we should be focusing on the story and issues surrounding it...as well as leaving some of our personal beliefs and/or asking questions concerning the story.

Wow! Hugh_Jass - you got way off course! You started the point that it was the Gazette's fault the place got robbed and shut down by the JPD. I was trying to correct your misguided conception since you failed to identify the root cause of the thefts. I can tell you it was not the Gazette. Until you can understand that, it is not worth debating as you are wrong. I don't have any anger issues unless I see somebody totally off base firing shots at somebody or something that is not worthy of the offensive. The Gazette was clearly being objective and reported what happened, and has no connection to what will happen after they report an issue or story. Simple as that.

hugh_jass i must agree with local boy's comment re: it takes a village. you proved his point with your next post. we must quit placing blame elsewhere and refer to breaking and entering, theft, and drunk driving by teens(and adults) as just innocent pranks. they are , in my opinion major violations. these kids have earned the title of theives. let's see if the kids....with the help of their parents, can earn some respect by doing the right things. then they can no longer be labeled theives. if they shrug it off, then the chances are they WILL commit more crimes. i also agree with you hugh_jass regarding people who post only to call other posters names and not opine on the issue. i hope you don't think i'm being rude. i'm not, and i respect both of your opinions....thanks for getting involved!

What kind of village do you expect when you refer to the youth as bums, idiots and hoodlums? There are plenty of great kids out there. But there are also much more cold & horrific-minded people out there, too. Kids finding out about a place that's an easy mark for alcohol is not terribly high on my list of troubled youth. I've seen worse. There is worse. Would these same kids be robbing banks and stealing cars when they get older (ie. above drinking age)? Likely not. It's a crime of misguided youth trying to get ahold of booze in what seems to them to be a fairly victimless crime. It's a choice they made and now they have to deal with the consequences. But I find it hard to believe these kids were just beginning their long-lasting criminal enterprise with these break-ins. Maybe localboy when you were a youth you were highly involved in local issues and read the newspaper everyday. But let's be honest. Most don't. And most turn out just fine. It's funny what we consider serious crime in this town...especially when there ARE other examples of serious crime going on in this town. By the way, localboy, I've just looked over your other comments to other issues. Seems to me you have control and anger management issues. If you're so concerned with local issues why not just focus on local issues and leave contructive criticisms? I've noticed on your many comments on the gazette focus more on OTHER people leaving posts or comments. Often attacking them personally rather then offering useful information or civil opinions. For that reason I've already learned it's useless to argue with people like you, as I'm sure most others on here have previously learned. My fault for being somewhat new here. Live and learn. Either way, this is still kinda of fun. Bring on the next bit of wisdom, localboy. Somehow I know you will provide some:-)

And another thing, I don't really picture those young hoodlums reading the Gazette everyday. I am sure they heard it on the street it was a easy target. If they were reading the Gazette, they would be concerned about local issues and probably would not have committed the crime.

It takes a village to raise an idiot, and with the blame always on somebody else, we are quickly raising a village full of them. We should focus on the bums that robbed the joint, not the newspaper. How come the other 62,235 people in Janesville didn't act on the urge to do them same thing to the store?

You have to agree with Huge_Jass's point to an extent. Localboy to use your scenario, if the paper were to print several articles about that same care unlocked with the keys in it, and where it was, yes, it would be more likely to be stolen. I don't think you and point the blame at the paper but they didn't help the situation any.

Wow localboy, great insult. Haven't heard that one since...gradeschool. Actually, I have. But that's usually the mentality of those who quickly find humor in my name. What's yours, by the way? I'm sure I could find something humorous, too. Or you prefer to hide behind localboysince1968? Anyways...if you really don't see the effect of The Gazette constantly pointing out an easy target for criminals then it's pretty much useless for me to explain it to you.

Hugh_Jass - your name says it all. I don't know if you are referring to your caudal, or your dispostion. Either way, how could it be the Gazette's fault for shutting down the liquor store? If you see a car in the parking lot with it unlocked and the keys in the ignition, do you take it? No! So why is it different the newspaper reported a story, and the thefts increase it is the newspaper's fault? Stealing is wrong and against the law regardless if the newspaper reports a vunerable business or not!

Gee, Janesville Gazette. I wonder why this place has been burglarized so often in the last few months. Any other businesses you wanna help the JPD shut down? Most people realize the cooperation that was going on behind the scenes.
