Rock County road conditions hazardous

By Shelly Birkelo ( Contact )   February 26, 2008 - 5:40 a.m.

The Rock County Sheriff’s Department recommends that motorists do not travel this morning unless necessary.

Road conditions are very hazardous at this time.

The majority of the roads are ice covered and blowing snow has blocked some lanes of traffic.

Motorist that must travel are urged to use extreme caution, reduce speed and be aware that intersections are icy.

If you really think the roads are that bad, and that it is putting your childs life at risk by sending them to school, then keep them home. Just because school has regular hours today, doesn't mean that you have to "endanger" your own child

We are dealing with it.
Sitting home in front of the computer rather than out driving in it.

Maybe Everybody should start to deal with all of these problems and maybe buy a truck so that you can pass through some of the road conditions that we have in the area this winter.

I think people ought to get used to Rock County Roads being impassable, I have never driven on such roads else where that complete sections of road is missing (between Walworth County Hwy 11 and Janesville. They need to take lessons from Walworth County on thier upkeep of roads!

The Rock County Sheriff’s Department recommends that motorists do not travel this morning unless necessary, what is unless necessary if there is school kids have to be there, if there is work people have to be there. People have to drive no matter what right. All roads should be plowed, we pay taxes for that and there for it should be done. No ands ifs or buts about it.We have to have sidewalks done so why don't the city get tickets for not doing all roads.

Unfortunately, the District could feel like they're between a rock and a hard place. Don't delay school and people are upset. Have delays and now they have childcare issues. Or closings and then people are upset because their kid has to go over spring break or on a Saturday or further into the summer. I'm sure that it is no easy decision. You are always in the position to NOT put your child on the bus and keep them home. I don't know of any teacher who doesn't allow a student to make up a test upon returning to school, whatever the reason for the absence.

Perhaps if the city of Janesville would plow side streets for once, there wouldn't be travel problems. We've received over a foot of snow since the big storm 3 weeks ago, and no plowing on any side streets since then. Ridiculous!

I also agree that the bus drivers really deserve a huge "Thank You" for driving in this. But, I also agree that if the sheriff's dept. is saying stay off the roads then the schools shouldn't put not only the kids but the bus drivers at risk. Sometimes policies don't work or are not in the best interest of many people and I think the Janesville School district needs to look at that. Now, my kid's school was delayed but even now I am worried about sending her on a bus. I know a lot of people have complained to the school district but no-one ever seems to get anywhere with them. They need to get off this power trip and take kids, bus drivers, and parents into consideration when they make these policies that could have really bad consequences.

I agree with delaying school for Janesville. What is it going to take to get it through the JSD's thick heads to keep kids/families off the roads? Do we really have to have a tragedy first? Look the Sheriffs Dept is saying stay off the roads ! Need we say more?

My boys' schools were NOT delayed .... and I kept my five year home and sent my 15 yr old off on the bus with regrets, but he has tests today. URGH When the news is saying DON'T DRIVE....why on earth would there be school??? Not only are the kids at risk...the nerves of those poor bus drivers must be shot. Thank you drivers.

Let's get the story straight. Not every school is delayed. We are in one of the small surrounding towns and most of the kids here ride a bus. THERE IS NO delay here. Try putting your kid on a bus and trusting in a driver getting your kids safely to school. It would be great if they were delayed too but not happening. THANK YOU to the bus drivers who drive in this stuff and get our kids safely to school each day.

I agree that Janesville should close early and open late when there is bad weather but they always told me, "If we have school, we stay all day." I am so glad we moved and now my kid doesn't go to Janesville anymore. I think they are a little careless when it comes to the safety of the kids.
