noexcuse, how about a few blocks from home (I was robbed at gunpoint 2 blocks from where I lived, walking home from work one night)? How about at a "Stop-N-Rob" if you need to gas up the car during the lonely hours? How about picking up a relative or friend at the bus station - think about the neighborhoods where they are sometimes located?
But I'm not offended by the tone of your question. In fact, I rewrote some cheery song lyrics for you (to the tune of "It's Beginning to Look Like Christmas").
With apologies to Meridith Wilson and Perry Como:
It's beginning to look a lot like freedom... In the Badger state The lawful can carry guns As easily as the Huns And teacher unions must carry their own weight.
It's beginning to look a lot like freedom... In the Badger state Liberals on the run No more theft of the highway fund And Democrats are hiding out-of-state.
The Highway Patrol's top cop post for their Dad Is the wish of Scott and Jeff Dems that won't talk but will go for a walk Or of honor are all bereft And Scott Walker can hardly wait for school to start again.
It's beginning to look a lot like freedom... In the Badger state There's a judge conservatives know Who will strike a telling blow The sturdy kind that doesn't shirk from rows.
It's beginning to look a lot like freedom... Soon the bells will start And the thing that will make them ring Is the right wing is now king Right within your heart.
To the people who say you will carry a gun now because the law changed(You didn't before) WHERE are you going in around here that you need to carry a gun? Can't you just not go to those places? This is a test question, rednecks. Step up and be honest.
claiming that handguns are for "people hunting" is like saying that a Geo Metro is for hauling freight - the wrong tool for the job description. Handguns are a defensive arm of last resort, not offensive weapons(other than highly specialized equipment in special situations). If handguns were an effective offensive arm I think the Army would have taken away my M16/M203 grenade launcher and issued me a Beretta. Far too much hysteria from folks who's lives won't change a bit.
@Zythia.... Who is talking about people hunting? LOL. People who 'hunt people' already carry around guns, illegally. As a 28 yr. old female, I'm happy others will now legally be able to carry. I grew up in a household where guns and respect go hand in hand. Once again, I believe this won't harm people, but keep more safe. Respectful gun owners, people willing to go through the CWC license process, are usually not 'people hunters'. And once again, half the state runs around with shotguns and rifles in their vehicle.... Those kill better than a handgun!
Javon Bea apparently thinks even less of his meal ticket than previously thought. He sat on this piece of property for 9 years and then announced a rushed construction initiative so that the facility would open just a few weeks before his only competition opens its doors... then tries to convince us "I've never been one to worry about what the competitions's doing." Really? .... Really?
Have had a CCW permit for years that covers (37) states, and have carried where legal. I welcome the addition of Wisconsin to this list. This is not a bad thing.
yeah... it doesn't matter that nothing is different with the laws. doesn't matter that our lives are still all in general danger from handguns. handguns. designed to HUNT PEOPLE. Sorry, but we "frothing, Madisony, handwringer types" think that is a pretty disgusting concept. You crazies have always had yer guns and will always get yer guns. Those guns will continue to be used to scare, intimidate, injure, kill, and destroy property as always -- in addition to hunting! lol We just don't understand how you crazy gun nuts can be so casual about blowing somebody away. - a person - an actual living, breathing, person. * "I'm gonna get me a this-gun and that gun that shoots whatever and whenever stuff and it'll be great!! YEEEEHAAAAAAWWWW!!! ANYBODY sets foot on my grass and they are toast!! I'll claim I was defendin' myself, as is my gawd givin' constitutional right!!!" * Now, of course, I am exaggerating somewhat. Not all gun nuts talk like that.
C'mon teach, everything you say is correct but it's fun to get these anti-gun folks all wound up. Most rational people know there will be no difference but I personally enjoy watching the frothing, Madisony, handwringer types lose their minds over nothing.
what most people don't realize is that it has been perfectly legal to walk around with your gun. where are all those folks?? I don't believe i've ever seen one person in wisconsin with a gun on their hip. this law just makes it legal to hide it.
Having to carry your firearm to the store is like being able to smoke where you choose to. If I walk into a public place, I lose individual power to someone with a firearm. This law is no big deal because everyone will forget it, and a few people will feel empowered by the cap gun on their side. So what was gained, more second amendment freedom? More like the NRA gets to stick out its chest with pride, and no real gain for all.
Wisconsin is long overdue for a concealed carry law. Hopefully Governor Walker will sign the bill before he gets mobbed by mentally deranged straight-ticket voting Democrats.
I-90 is long overdue for repairs and an upgrade. Perhaps Governor Walker will expedite the work on the southbound section between Madison the Illinois border to hustle out all those fleeing hysterical anti-gun Dane County residents.
The Gazette blogs are long overdue for a housecleaning. Scott Angus should shop for software that allows Gazette to charge for posting messages. Gazette subscribers could post at a lower rate, say 25 cents per message. Non-subscribers should have to pay more, say 40 cents. That's cheaper than the 1st class stamp to mail a letter to the editor and I believe it would cut down on the number messages posted by copy-n-paste clowns, some whom obviously don't even read the story or previous comments before posting their repetitive tripe.
To get back on topic (something many messages here have failed to do), yes, I plan get a permit to carry a concealed firearm. I've already obtained a Utah non-resident permit for the extra training and reciprocity privileges which may not be available with the Wisconsin permit.
Statistically, states with concealed carry laws reduce their amount of violent crime compared to states (oops - that'll be state - as in Illinois alone having no provision for concealed carry) without concealed carry laws. I'd rather have a firearm and not need it, than need one and not have it - a position I have unfortunately been in before.
Sunday morning, I heard on WGN radio that 11 people had been shot (1 killed) in Chicago on Saturday night. http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local... Of course, none of the victims, nor any law-abiding Good Samaritans in the vicinities who witnessed some of the shootings, could have had concealed carry permits in Illinois.
Oh people, half the state already drives around with guns in their car. It's always hunting season of some sort. You're not mad about that. Now people will be carrying them on their body, and it won't be many. The novelty will wear off. Bars probably won't allow them, just like schools and public office buildings. This is like the other 48 or so states that allow it. Laws will still apply, if you go waiving your gun at someone like an idiot, you'll be arrested and possibly forfeit your carrying rights. Many people already carry, you just don't know it. Now perhaps an apparent attacker (Who's getting repeatedly attacked anyway? Perhaps you should change your approach to people and life...) will think twice. Guns aren't scary, just idiots using them. Most people who carry will know how to use their gun considering they're strapping it to their body and taking it around their family. If they don't know, maybe that will be one less dingdong off the street! It will be ok.... Calm down.
Grandys: You are wrong about your statement. I said Weiner should step down at the time it came up. What I don't understand is why Vitter never had to step down.
Wow ban all hand guns that is an intelligent statement. What about criminals who don't care if banned or not? I am glad that they have passed a law that it can now be concealed which takes away someone else judging someones decision to have it available. I am glad to see that not only criminals can carry concealed anymore. I am not a gun enthusiast but will be getting myself protection. Recently someone I knew had a gun pulled on them for no more reason then doing their job. So since I too work late night I too will be packing heat for any such situation that were to escalate to this.
I won't be carrying a weapon myself. Nor will I be worried about people who responsibly carry them. I am however shocked at the responses of those here that feel they are so threatened they need to start carrying.
It seems many of you truly believe you will be a target, and therefor need to protect yourself. More likely however, your vanity is the cause for your so called 'need'. I have noticed a trend in people that proclaim a sense of fear toward 'criminal types'.
One of two things are usually present. The first thing is they have the impression that their success, displayed by their outward appearance, somehow makes them a target to those with less than they have. As if somehow they are the envy of all the criminals, just waiting to be preyed upon.
The other trait I have seen tends to be more concerning. Some people just believe that violence is more prevalent than it actually is. The reason for their perception is because they themselves have a propensity for conflict. Essentially, their reasoning for thinking they will be attacked is that they consistently seek out confrontation.
Bottom line, for the majority of us here, we don't need the extra security of a firearm. Instead, we keep ourselves safe by conducting ourselves peaceably. We are proactive in ensuring our safety by assessing the situations we may put ourselves in, and work at avoiding conflict.
I urge everyone who is intelligent enough to NOT be so fearful that they they need to carry a gun 24/7, to ask every public facility, every shop, every bar, every campus, EVERY public place they are in to post that location as a "Gun Free Zone". The errant GOP legislature and governor have chosen to vote against the health and welfare of their constituents so now the people need to take action on their own behalf. Encourage the places you frequent to give you real protection - freedom from those afraid of their own shadows.
winstonchill~ Great idea. When my kids are at the legal age to get in the bars, I'll be sure to arm them with a sidearm so they set people straight when they get a snoot full and look at them wrong. Why didn't I think of that??!! Shoot everyone who can't handle their liquor!

JUST SO YOU KNOW SHARONb1 Wis. Justice Says He Didn‘t Put His Hands Around Fellow Justice’s Neck Posted on June 26, 2011 at 11:57am by Madeleine Morgenstern Print » Email » MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A Wisconsin Supreme Court justice says reports that he placed his hands around a fellow justice’s neck during an argument in her office are false.
Justice David Prosser told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that the allegations involving him and Justice Ann Walsh Bradley “will be proven false” once a “proper review of the matter and the facts surrounding it are made clear.”
Wisconsin Public Radio and the Wisconsin Center for Investigative Journalism, quoting anonymous sources, reported Saturday that the alleged altercation occurred before the Supreme Court’s decision earlier this month upholding Gov. Scott Walker‘s bill to cut public employees’ collective bargaining rights.
Messages that The Associated Press left with several of the justices and Capitol Police Chief Charles Tubbs were not returned Saturday.
SaraB1, We are talking about conceal carry here. Not about Mr Prosser. Give it a rest will ya !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have been carring for some time now as alot of other people have too. Wisconsin has caught up with the rest of the US ! Thanks Mr Walker !!!! Keep up the good work !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think Prosser was defending himself. I think much more of him than I do of you Sarahb1. I didn't see you on here calling for Weiner resign, but here you are, calling for a conservative to do it. I'm just sick of you and have nothing more to offer you. You cut me down, tell me to get educated, call me names and lean so far to the left the knuckles on your left hand are gone. Bugger off!
thekai: However, Great Britain has more than it's share of stabbings. They are now working on outlawing knives. A chef was carrying his knives home and got arrested.
"still against the law to shoot somebody" Not in self-defense. . "isn't any reason why anyone other than law enforcement need to carry a weapon" Other than crime, of course. I carry a pistol to protect myself between when the criminal decides to attack & the police arrive. . "Carrying a weapon increases the risk of injuring or killing yourself or another person" Data from other states with concealed carry doesn't support your statement. The only people at higher risk will be criminals. I can't see that as a bad thing. . "especially in the heat of the moment or if/when drugs or alcohol are involved. It also puts officers at risk." Again, data does not back up your ideas. Officers are at risk from criminals. Criminals won't be getting permits. People who don't carry concealed now because it's against the law, but will once it's legal are good citizens who wouldn't harm a cop & might help. . "It is already (and will remain) against Federal law to carry a weapon inside the school" That's state law. Other states have different laws. Utah, for example, allows ANYONE with a permit to carry INSIDE a school. Teachers carry in the classroom to protect their students. . WI has had shootings in schools & in school zones. Utah hasn't. Maybe they're doing something right?
I (now)have the right to defend myself and the fact that liberals in Wis. took that right from me long ago is exactally why I carry today. . You know, all of you who think this is a bad thing will continue to believe it till you are looking down the barrel of some thugs gun. Till then, we will lock and load for you. Peace!
After seeing a few of these comments below, I feel safer already. I'm sure the gang bangers are shaking in their boots. Oh wait, that's right, the law applies equally to all races so they too be packin.
As a nostalgia buff, I carry two double-action Smith & Wesson Model 29 .44-cal. Magnum revolvers everywhere I go. I listen to my police scanner and go to where are in need of my assistance. I then just sort of figure out who the bad guys are and commence cranking. I am sure that the police really appreciate my help!
Gary, I plan on making mine an Uzi. I'm not that good of shot so if I ever need to defend myself I want to be able to get 30-40 shots off as quickly as possible. ;-)
There really isn't any reason why anyone other than law enforcement need to carry a weapon concealed or not. Carrying a weapon increases the risk of injuring or killing yourself or another person, especially in the heat of the moment or if/when drugs or alcohol are involved. It also puts officers at risk.
Well, if Gary carries through with his promise, we won't have to worry about him for the next 10yrs. . It is already (and will remain, after the law goes into effect) against Federal law to carry a weapon inside the school, on the school grounds/property & within 1000' of the school. The only thing this new law does, is allow carrying (with a permit) within the 1000' "Gun Free School Zone"... for example, the sidewalk around the school - NOT inside the building.
Mr. Jones: What's that [gun] for? Craig: Protection Mr. Jones: Protection? Protection from who? Craig: Me and Smokey.... I got to walk Smokey down to his house. Mr. Jones: Aw man. Your mother and me never would have moved to this neighborhood if we had known you need a gun to walk down the street. Craig: You know how it is around here. Mr. Jones: Oh no son, that's not the way it is. You kids today are nothing but -punks-. Sissy fightin'. So quick to pick up a gun. You scared to take an @#! whoopin'. [Fists up] This is what makes you a man. When I was growing up, this was all the protection we needed. You win some, you lose some. But you live... You live to fight another day! Now you think you're a man with that gun in your hand, don't you? Craig: I'm a man without it.
I just don't see the need to carry a concealed weapon. Hand guns are over rated anyways. They give a false sense of security, and provide a window of opportunity for your opponent.
I plan to carry a sawed-off shotgun in a sling when I shop for groceries at Woodmans. I don't like the way some of the people look at me.

Wis. Justice Says He Didn‘t Put His Hands Around Fellow Justice’s Neck
Posted on June 26, 2011 at 11:57am by Madeleine Morgenstern Print » Email » MADISON, Wis.

Ok, you have a right to carry a gun but nothing in the constitution gave you the right to carry it concealed. Why does it have to be concealed?
I'm not a criminal but if I'm around people carrying a weapon I want to know about it.

Bugger off!

Utah has a reputation for being very Mormon. Maybe that is the answer?
Just out of curiosity, how many school shootings have occurred in England in the last decade (where firearms are almost entirely illegal)?

"still against the law to shoot somebody"
Not in self-defense.
.
"isn't any reason why anyone other than law enforcement need to carry a weapon"
Other than crime, of course. I carry a pistol to protect myself between when the criminal decides to attack & the police arrive.
.
"Carrying a weapon increases the risk of injuring or killing yourself or another person"
Data from other states with concealed carry doesn't support your statement.
The only people at higher risk will be criminals. I can't see that as a bad thing.
.
"especially in the heat of the moment or if/when drugs or alcohol are involved. It also puts officers at risk."
Again, data does not back up your ideas.
Officers are at risk from criminals.
Criminals won't be getting permits.
People who don't carry concealed now because it's against the law, but will once it's legal are good citizens who wouldn't harm a cop & might help.
.
"It is already (and will remain) against Federal law to carry a weapon inside the school"
That's state law.

Peace!

I have to start to carry a weapon for protection now because, in addition to arming responsible people, Wisconsin also armed a bunch of nut-jobs.

Craig: Protection
Mr.
