They need to understand that they can't have it both ways. If it's a mandate, then it's not being truly business (and therefore profit) oriented. If it's a business, we need to get rid of all the extra mandates. Either option is fine and understandable, we just need to stick with one or the other.
I have no love for the postal system. Their hours keep getting less and less; so it makes it harder to meet window times if you need them.
Then when you want to send a package,...."Oh it's a 1/16 of an inch too wide...extra charge! Oh it's 1/8 inch too long...another charge!!" I use UPS & Fed-Ex now. Much simpler, quick service delivery, and just about the same price, IF NOT LESS sometimes.

They have it better in Milton. No slippery sidewalks. Street delivery only. If your mailbox isn't totally cleaned to the curb, they drive right by until cleaned. No getting out unless there's a registered letter, etc.

I'd rather they dropped mail delivery on a Wednesday. I don't like the 2 day stagnancy on mail turnaround. Sunday and Wednesday without mail would work better for me!
I rarely get mail on Saturday right now; although I think that has more to do with a lazy letter carrier than post office policy.
my letter carrier bundles my mail by wrapping a large letter around the others (this sucks when she creases my Natl. Geographic mags). On Mondays following a skipped Saturday delivery I get two distict bundles delivered. I have to assume 1 bundle is from Saturday and the other is the current days mail. Am I wrong or is my letter carrier being sneaky??
Ok Mollyd5... I take it you’re going to be first in line... The "thinning the heard" line, Right? You can be our lead “flea” and the rest of us; well we'll be there for moral support... P.S. DON'T ARGUE, JUST THINK ABOUT IT!
I'm okay with cutting back on saturday, but will the post office start working like a business or will our elected officals noses get stuck into it, will the price of stamps level off and will the postal service lay off people...
there will be a day soon when SS checks and many other government checks will be automatically deposited and not sent in a check form. its a waste of money.
janesvillean; the two day gap is my concern as well. Not certain when SS checks are delivered, but I'm sure they occasionally fall on a Saturday. What about Gram/Gramps relying on getting their check on time? etc.. etc...
The day cut should be a week day to prevent the two day gap.
Regarding Junk Mail....when we were going to move I made a point of taking every piece of junk mail, cutting out my address and writing "Remove from mailing list" across it. Then on the outside of the envelope I addressed it with a heading "Address Correction". Some companies needed two or three notifications, but I was able to stop it all eventually. I wish I had done it sooner because I wasted a considerable amount of time each evening sorting the junk mail from the important stuff. Also feel better that I'm not as much a part of a perpetual cycle wasting natural resources (paper pulp).
I don't like to get all that junk mail. Maybe the postal service should raise the postage rate on all that junk mail. As for as getting mail on Saturday, it's a very good idea. I still use the mail for my bills.
The postal service has been reduced to a carrier of "junk mail" only. Each day I walk to my mail box and remove the contents, taking it directly to the trash can and depositing same. It will be refreshing not to have to do it on Saturday.
it s not your passwords they want , they link to your computer and copy your keystrokes,so even the most secure websites are not that secure when the information is coming off your computer with every word you type.
packfan- Your identity is just as vulnerable when it is sitting in an envelope. Many felons have learned how to open a sealed envelope to get your banking information.
It amazes me how many people are fearful of the lies with technology, just because they don't understand it.
packfan- Do you know how many people see your CHECK/credit card and can do fraud with it? You don't need to save your passwords. Save them in your brain and nobody can get into it. another example how many people have your credit card info when you go shopping or out to eat? One time long ago the only person that had my credit info was AOL to pay for my bill. somebody somewhere in their system took my number. They insisted is wasn't them anywhere but they were the only ones that had this particular credit card info. (for a reason). I have never had these troubles since and do all online.
Paying bills electronically is awesome. You don't have to worry about running to the post office to get stamps. You can pay them all in a few clicks of the mouse. No checks to write either.
I get almost all my bills electronically. That isn't a issue. Where they will find problems is with those in the ebay community who rely on the USPS for much of their shipping. With that skipping 2 days a week at this point, I am guessing that UPS and other rival services will see an increase in business.
The only concern I have is where this leads. If eventually they start cutting out days of the week, then my bills come later. Not that I miss getting bills, but I'm concerned it will give me less time to get a check written and get it out, then without another day of the week for the mail to travel, does my payment get to its destination in time. Now, before you criticize me for not using online bill pay options, think about how many times you hear about identity theft. How many times have you heard about somebody leaving a laptop full of your information at a coffee shop? I'd rather pay the cash for stamps and put them in the mail than have my personal information floating out in cyberspace for anybody to grab and steal.
I am not an expert on the PO, but reducing bulk and junk mail would hurt them even more. I am pretty sure the PO is setup to efficiently handle large amount of bulk. They have to run the same equipment and routes whether they deliver 1 piece or 5 pieces per address. Another way of cost saving would be to have have rural addresses pay extra if they want delivery since they are probably the least efficient to deliver to. I know there is a law the PO is required to deliver to every US address at the same price.
I still believe they could cut their staff in half save half the fossil fuels they use and make a profit if they delivered mail every other day with each carrier having 2 routes I don't need to get JUNK mail every day
Few if any are relying on daily delivery of first class mail. They could stop Saturdays and do every other day, and raise the prices on unsolicited junk mail, fliers and catalogs to either generate revenue or reduce the bulk of the mail delivery.
They better do something soon, and stop thinking that selling Disney stamps and posters is going to save them. And they better stop putting the burden on first class mailers (who are getting fewer and fewer) and shift it to the junkers.
For me personally, they could stop delivery all but one day a week. Even then half the mail would go directly to the trash. That said, maybe they could still deliver to businesses on Saturday?
purmaid, they are not planning on closing the post office on saturday just street delivery, as far as your packages go , all mailer s will get new delivery cut off times for thing s to be delivered by friday. it wont affect you as much as you think it will, as far as monday holidays go most would be eliminated. they are also saying that priority packages and express will still get delivered on sat. they are even talking of extending window hours m-f . so the only thing this would effect is the mail that s being put in your box take a look the next few saturdays , if the post office goes under there will be no delivery m-s at all which is the more evil. most businesses are closed on saturday so it wouldnt effect them either but a day off during the week would then mean they would only get delivery 4 days a week unless they rented a po box.
If they choose to eliminate a day of service, I wish it was Thursday so there isn't a two-day gap in which the mail is at a standstill. If Saturday is removed and there is a Monday holiday, that's a three-day gap. We receive meds, vitamins and other food stuffs that shouldn't be left in a warehouse for several days, even with dry ice.
Though I can order stamps online, I still ship packages requiring hand-delivery to the Post Office. Saturdays are when I conduct this business because noon hours are out...the lines at the Post Office are ridiculous, and they close before I get out of work.
my suggestion has always been to eliminate Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday RESIDENTIAL mail delivery. You can eliminate all Saturday service for both residential and business.
Businesses need delivery and pick up every day. (my wife for one works for a financial office and the SEC requires some documents are turned over within 24 hours.)
Residential delivery service is not needed, if you truly need delivery every day then get a PO box and check it, otherwise you can still drop it off if you need something paid. People would adjust and plan ahead.
For all those arguments about the Elderly, most elderly i know, still have a phone and most companies you can always call a payment in over the phone if you do not have the internet. Otherwise maybe have them "young, wipper-snappers" set up automatic bill pay for them, then there is no worries.
for the comment about letting other businesses using the mail box , seriously do you want just anyone to pull up and be able to open your mailbox with recourse. that s part of the reason they dont let them use it . this keeps it a federal offense for stealing mail. if everyone and anyone was allowed to use your box they would have no recourse to prosecute anyone for stealing things out of your box. partician1 , if they eliminated junk mail they wouldnt have a job either
wow alot of you have absolutely no clue, the junk mail is what pays for your mail to get delivered to you . with out that you would no longer get street delivery and be forced to drive to the po everyday to retrieve your mail. the elimination of sat delivery wont affect how the mail is processed. the plants will still run the mail will still move , the only difference is there would be no street delivery on sat. part of the ploy here is people who want six day delivery would then rent a po box , there fore generating more revenue for the post office. other countries charge far more for postage then they do here. they will eliminate some holidays and are also proposing sat delivery in the month of dec.if this is what they need to do to stay profitable then they should do it . i see my mail carrier six days a week , im willing to bet he would like to have a normal family life with weekend s with his kids.
I would prefer they eliminate the junk mail delivery instead of eliminating the Saturday route. I know a local carrier who only works Saturdays, and he would lose his job if they eliminate Saturday delivery.
This would have an impact on me for both personal and business reasons -- yes, as invested as I am in the internet. It's actually been suggested in the past that the USPS eliminate a midweek day like Wednesday or Thursday so that there isn't a two-day gap when you can't receive or send mail, but that would also create problems for companies that might have idle employees those days. Still, some service cutbacks are inevitable as correspondence and bill-paying both move inexorably to electronic media.
Elimination of Saturday mail delivery impact? That would save me a trip to the mailbox on Saturdays, but I would probably make up for the loss of that minute amount of exercise by making an extra trip to the fridge.
Southside Nancy: Just because you don't use the post office or stamps doesn't mean no one does. There is a significant elderly population that doesn't have computers, internet, nor the means to purchase these things. Much less to learn how to use it.
I still enjoy getting personal notes or cards in the mail. I don't like the junk mail any more than the next person, but seriously closing the post office isn't reasonable.

Let me see, paying someone up to $24.00 an hour to bring junk mail and bills. Maybe i'll start a Sat delivery for that kind of loot.

PLEASE keep Saturdays!

my suggestion has always been to eliminate Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday RESIDENTIAL mail delivery.
Just my 2 cents.

for the comment about letting other businesses using the mail box , seriously do you want just anyone to pull up and be able to open your mailbox with recourse. that s part of the reason they dont let them use it . this keeps it a federal offense for stealing mail. if everyone and anyone was allowed to use your box they would have no recourse to prosecute anyone for stealing things out of your box. partician1 , if they eliminated junk mail they wouldnt have a job either

wow alot of you have absolutely no clue, the junk mail is what pays for your mail to get delivered to you . with out that you would no longer get street delivery and be forced to drive to the po everyday to retrieve your mail. the elimination of sat delivery wont affect how the mail is processed. the plants will still run the mail will still move , the only difference is there would be no street delivery on sat. part of the ploy here is people who want six day delivery would then rent a po box , there fore generating more revenue for the post office. other countries charge far more for postage then they do here. they will eliminate some holidays and are also proposing sat delivery in the month of dec.if this is what they need to do to stay profitable then they should do it . i see my mail carrier six days a week , im willing to bet he would like to have a normal family life with weekend s with his kids.

I would prefer they eliminate the junk mail delivery instead of eliminating the Saturday route. I know a local carrier who only works Saturdays, and he would lose his job if they eliminate Saturday delivery.

I receive shipments for my home-business from the USPS and no delivery on Saturdays would certainly change things.
