The first big one not so good, but hey its the beginning of the season we all have to get into the swing. This last ice and mush then snow...I have to say as much as I tend to critisize them, they did a fabulous job...I was really impressed...the only question i have is Milton Ave they throw the stuff (which is only like 18" from the curb up on the easement and sidewalk) then my guys cannt move it with a dozer and we try and try but we end up with 2 feet of walk space.

My comments on the city plowing. Normally they do a good job but when they make a mistake they need to correct it. During the last snow storm the plow driver accidently jumped the curb with the plow and plowed all the snow from the street and curb onto the sidewalk. We only have a 12"-18" terrace
(thanks to widening the road a few years ago). There was 3-4' of the frozen slush and snow on the sidewalk.I contacted the city services first but they didn't seem interested.
I contacted a city council man and thought the city was going to take care of it. But lo and behold yesterday we received a 3 day notice. I called the city services and received NO SATISFACTION from them. Called the city councilman back he thought it was taken care of. Ended up hiring a plow truck to remove it. Do not think this was my responsibility! Maybe I should send the city a bill for $124.00.

If you just grip your shovel with two hands, you should have no problem no matter the size of your shovel. It's all in technique.

MooShoo, if I use a short shovel then I am more likely to hurt my back than if I used a tall one. Why? I'm 6'4". Using shorter shovels when you're tall has you bending over a lot more to do the same task. I love my long shovel ^_^
--
Mandating shovel size is a tad invasive, if you ask me. Why should the government be able to tell me how long my shovel can be o_o?

Our streets have always been taken care of very nicely. We have never had a complaint for the plow crews, they have our praise for a job very well done!!

Like the Gazette, I believe the City should mandate shorter shovels. I have discovered shorter shovels are easier on the back. And unlike tempers, shovels should be short.

Thing is, the amount of salt they put on the streets, and all this goes into the river and streams when the spring thraw comes. Janesville was banned by the DNR as well as other cities from dumping snow into the river many years ago becaise of the salt.

On Friday, a snowplow ran into a parked car just feet from my young children that were walking home from school. The owner of the car apparently came out yelling, "you stupid sucker". At least that is what my 6 year old heard, though I suspect his innocence changed the words a bit. LOL.

Being a letter carrier in Janesville and on the sidewalks and streets 5 out of 7 days a week I see much better street conditions this winter than last. Kudos to the City of Janesville Plow Drivers, Keep up the good work!!

Another banner year for Janesville City Services's snow-removal ... and it's only half way thru winter. Thanks for a job well done.

I've noticed the plowing seems better this year. Although I do think weather conditions dictate how well the roads plow. Remember December of 2007, it rained then it snowed and it rained then it snowed. No matter how quickly the crews would have got out after that, it causes a tough time of plowing. Now, if a couple of my neighbors on Richardson would quit blowing their driveways straight out in to the street after the plow goes by, that would be wonderful.

Dear SarahB1, yes I read your opening but I was commenting on the rest of the statement. There were many times in the past, knowing the snow on the streets and hills of Janesville, and knowing my vehicle wouldn't make it up them (It was still snowing) I managed to get to work by finding an alternate route. This last storm, the snow plows were out during the snow comming down. The city snow plows can only be in so many places at a time and they are doing the best they can. If you know you have to be at work and it is snowing, if at all possible you might want to look at an alternate route. Yes,it will take you longer but at least you won't have to worry about climbing a hill and getting stuck or sliding all over the place.
As for my previous job (now retired)it wasn't being a "slinger" and it is MR. If you felt slung at, sorry, but your a pretty good slinger yourself.

I have made only a couple of trips to your fine city this season. From what I've seen so far, your snowplow crews are doing much better job this year! :~)

emac,
I think the time the plows go by have more to do with the weather than convenience of people in the city. Why plow during the day if the storm will subside in six more hours, for example? Most plows also drop salt or other mixtures designed to help with traction.... when they push their blade down the street, they remove a large amount of what the plow before it laid down. It's simply not effective to plow a great number of times. It makes more sense to wait as late as you can, dictated by situation.

I think they have done a great job this season. Last year S. Grant didn't see a plow I don't think, this year they have been very quick to get us plowed. Boo Hoo about your drive way being plowed in, they have no choice, you would complain no matter what time they did it! you did last year when they did it later in the day!!

My point was how late the side streets were plowed yesterday. Normally, they do this during daylight hours and you have a chance to get dug out for the next day.

In previous years, it has taken a couple of days to have S Marion plowed. These last two major snowfalls, it has been done fairly quickly and I am grateful for that!!

Thanks, SarahB1 for the comeback. Brodhead certainly has a much smaller city crew than Janesville. They probably have 2 trucks! I used to live there and was very happy on the street conditions.
.
What is up with the complaints about driveways being "plowed in"?!? What are they supposed to do? Personally, get out and clean everyone's driveway approach out? They do that to me too everytime they plow after I've cleaned my driveway out. Sure, it's kind of a pain, but do you have any suggestions on an alternative???

I think they will reimburse you for a mail box. I think they will do it once a year I believe. That is life about getting plowed in. They cannot push it anyplace else. some people have mentioned if you plow into the road the pile they leave behind may be smaller.
I have seen some people put the mailbox and pole in a big container of cement or something to try to make it stay better.

compared to last year, this year the crews are doing an excellent job! I wondered about the plows not starting until much later in the snowfall; however, if they can get by with plowig the streets really well one time instead of doing a quick pass on two occasions, it will save $. Can't please everyone all the time. Heck, in Janesville, you can't please some people EVER. I agree with omygosh1000. People that complain about snow removal in Wisconsin just have an unhappy and pessimistic attitude about life in general. And to them I say....MOVE to Arizona or something. PLEASE! And quit whining already....thanks. Have a good day! :)

I am very impressed with how J-town is completing snow removal. Living here, but working in Madison, you get an interesting perspective. Madison has, once again, done an abyssmal job of clearing the roads. In fact, during the biggie storm last month, it was amazing to see the roads in J-town clear, the Interstate clear all the way to Madison, and then you hit the beltline (Hwy 12-18) and it was, for lack of a better word, crap. Here's to the Janesville road crew. As for the unfortunate mailbox knock-down: sad, but, the city actually owns the parkway...anything you put there, you do so at your own risk/cost.

usaret: You are an excellent "slinger". Is that what you used to do for a living? Please reread my opening statement (on my previous entry here) before attacking me. First, I would think that Court Street near the courthouse would be a priority area. My vehicle and most of those on that portion of the road had trouble getting up the hill yesterday morning. (This included a monster public bus.) I was told later by a county employee that "that street is the joke at the courthouse; it is always a slide and dangerous". Secondly, my note about Brodhead was made because it seems many other communities in the area (for example, Beloit) send their plows out during a storm. I am not a Janesville native but have noticed that in most of my 10 years here, that the plows don't seem to get to work until many hours after the snow has piled up. Excuse me if I am wrong, but that is how I see it. Also, I don't know what you did for work, but my present job does not allow for a choice as far as my attendance. Sometimes using "common sense" is not acceptable and one has to use a certain street. Now, you have a good day, Mr./Mrs./Ms. Slinger. Everybody else, drive safely.

I'd like to commend the plow drivers this year, not only did they do a great job on Grant street, but when a small child was on top of a snow bank, we watched the plow driver actually stop and wait for the child to get down and move before he continued on. It's nice to see safety first!

They are doing a great job as far as I am concerned.
Glad Brodheads streets where clean by 11:30a.m.
Wonder how many miles of streets they had to cover as compared to the number of miles of streets in Janesville?
As for the hills, how many hills are there in Janesville? I'm sure if they knew you were going to be using that hill they would have come right over and sanded it as you drove up it or down it. But of course someone else was already having that done for them. Guess you'll have to get in the special privileges line earlier next time. Some of you need to use a little common sense.

I was very happy with this year's plowing until I had to navigate several hills in town midmorning today. Throw some sand or something, would ya?! On another note, I was pleasantly surprised to find Brodhead's streets completely plowed by 11:30 a.m.

Janesville and Rock County snow removal always has been and continues to be a joke. Ask any long-haul truck driver their impression of Rock County Wisconsin snow removal efforts. I don't know how the persons responsible for Janesville city and Rock County snow plowing keeps their job year after year.
