Oh people, please! Just because people enjoy these social websites doesn't mean they "don't" do anything useful with their time. And by the way, if you don't know where that person is that you want to call...you can't call them now can you? But with Facebook, your odds of finding a lost loved one is huge! Don't diss until you try! I dissed, and now it is a regular part of my life. And as far as those goofy presents etc...that you say you are offered, don't except them...simple as that. If is someone you don't know asking to be your friend, IGNORE them...simple as that! You DO have to agree to EVERYTHING being done....no conspiracy theories here.

I thought facebook was just for kids as well, until my SIL talked me into signing up, and I found people that I would have never talked to or seen if it weren't for facebook. I found my BFF from 20+ years ago in Germany, and we are planning a trip to GA this summer to reconnect. It depends on how social you are, but I LOVE facebook, and let's just say I am NOT a kid in years, but at heart, I would have to say yes! :)

I don't even understand Twitter...

I can see the usefulness of Facebook for networking. They offer a variety of unique features and networking options. However, the only people who I see using Twitter either:
A. Have no life.
B. Are at work and should be doing something more productive.
C. Don't have the mental capacity to handle more than shorthand or short sentences.
D. Are tweeting simply to promote a website or sites.
E. Promoting something in general.
I think they will both be around a while, but I can see Twitter fading in popularity quickly or as soon as the "Next Big Thing" comes along. I personally wouldn't follow anyone but friends or family on a social networking site, but I know people who are much more into these sites then I am.

Facebook and Twitter are social networking sites and while one could argue they're usefulness, they are here to stay.
Why would I care that the Gazette has a page, it's a social site were I connect to family and friends. Can't I get everything I need fro the Gazette on this site?
It seems almost as silly as the Rock County Sheriff using Twitter to send out "important" notices. It may be hard to believe but they really are trying to notify the public with Twitter. I would question how successful such notices could be, given that Twitter says 2 out of 3 new accounts go dormant within 90 days.

Facebook is great! I have found several people I have lost touch with over the years, and a few friends from high school. We were in different "groups" then, but we have a lot in common now. It's worth it just to play the online Scrabble!

I enjoy using facebook. It's like a class reunion every time I go on. With so many family members and friends all over the country, it's nice to be able to keep in touch.

Social networking sites may be an alternative to email and phone calls for some, but for others it's fun... and not *THAT* big of a security problem. Facebook, for example, offers you suggestions for friends and interests. You also have control over who accesses your information. That control starts with how much the individual offers in the first place. If you're that big of a conspiracy nut and think the internet is meant to steal your life, you don't need to be on or near a computer in the first place. It's not for everyone, but it's not the huge deal people are making it out to be. The amount of online privacy you want starts with you.

I agree with "pack". I got sick of constant invitations to be "friends" with other people's friends whom I have never heard of. Mostly if I want to connect with someone, I'll pick up that little cell phone that is now attached to my body or in my bag at all times and actually talk to the person; better yet, make plans to get together - in person!:) Although I do think it is a neat tool (especially for college kids) for long distance friendships to stay connected. But with nationwide calling...I'd still rather use my phone!

Look, many people like these sites for what they do. It's kinda fun to watch big conversations take place among friends over the course of a day, and sometimes even celebrities pop up here and there. Young people especially prefer them over e-mail. But if you don't want to use them, it's not that big a deal.

To anyone reading this? Stear clear of tinyurl. Tinyurl just LOVES 'cookies', and they will re-introduce the concept of pop-up windows to your machine. Also, I believe Facebook and Twitter are over hyped media tools. Just because Hota Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford have Twitter doesn't mean you should just automatically migrate there.

I tried Facebook once. My friends kept *introducing* me to their friends. I don't want my private info going around the web thankyouverymuch. And everybody wants to send you gifts that you have to open. I work for a living, I don't have all day to surf the web and open stupid gifts that end up taking my personal info and sending to who knows where. You can prolly take my drift that I don't trust Facebook and all that other garbage online.
