If your smoke detector goes off while cooking, all you have to do is hit the reset button.

I know when I'm using by broiler, I put a chair under the the smoke detector. I know it's going to go off.

oUR LAND LORD SENDS SOMEONE AROUND EVERY YEAR TO CHANGE THE BATTERIES PLUS WE CHECK IT ON AND OFF DURING THE YEAR. INFACT SOMEONE IS COMING AROUND NEXT TUESDAY TO CHANGE THE BATTERIES. IF IT DOES GO OFF DURING COOKING FOR SOME REASON WE OPEN WINDOWS AND DOORS TO CLEAR THINGS OUT AND THEN WHEN WE RECLOSE THE WINDOWS WE CHECK IT TO MAKE SURE IT IS WORKING PROPERLY

As a landlord, I go above and beyond the regulations. I have a detector not only on each floor, but in every room; and they are connected to the house power supply (and a backup battery)

Good question. I was wondering that myself. I would think that if the tenant disabled them , then they would be the ones to be fined. Although I can see not having one in/near the kitchen if cooking sets it off(like mine does)
But relocating it to just outside of the cooking area should be acceptable.

Personally I have a smoke detector in every room in the house, except the kitchen and bathroom. Plus I have 2 fire extinguishers, one on the main level and the other in the basement. To me they are just as important as smoke detectors.

I check both detectors/extinguishers several times a year. You just never know when you will need them.

Question: If a landlord is cited for not providing the required number of smoke detectors in a residence, who is responsible if a tenant disables one of the smoke detectors?

I never change the battery because I live in military barracks, and it is only my job to report if the battery is dieing (although currently my room has a smoke detector that's wired into the power grid.) Whenever I go to a new room though, I always check to make sure it works. Occasionally when I inspect my Marine's rooms, I'll check theirs as well.
