And where in Janesville do you think this business was located? This was it's original location before it relocated and then was sold in the late 50's.

My grandpa George Simmons sold Ozarka Radios and you can see from the attachment he had a nice model T truck that he used to sell them. Grandpa George also had an invention of the Z spark plug. The
spark plug had a fire ring on it to burn off the excess oil that was in the low compression engines of the time. His business was doing quite well, but he passed away before it came to full production. My father
and his brother did not have the expertise to continue production. So the patents were sold to two men from Chicago for $50.

In 1990 my Dad and I were driving by what was Helgesen Auto Parts along Highway 14 in Janesville and saw this unique old truck that he remembered as a kid. My Dad grew up on Randall Ave and
he said the man(Ben Schultz) used to deliver groceries to people who were not able to drive to get them. The truck must have been sort of an icon because I have heard about many people that have remembered seeing it driving around town in the 1950's and 60's. My Dad worked with someone who used to ride in the back on the way to school. I recently read a comment that a reader shared his story about it with the Art's Grocery Store picture. In 1992 Helgesen's had an auction of all the remaining vehicles in the estate and my Dad purchased the old truck for $175 edging out a salvage
yard. The truck is a 1949 GMC Canopy Express. It had canvas sides that would roll up and down, a wood bed, and only one bucket seat for the driver. It was too unique of a truck to let go to a salvage yard. Since that time, I purchased the truck from my Dad and have been buying the pieces to once again put the truck back on the road.

Wisconsin School for the Blind taken in 1865. The school is still located in the same spot at 1700 W. State St. In 1874, there was a major fire at the school. This fire caused one death, Henry Nelson, and was the contributing cause to the death of Superintendent Tom Little in 1875. Many community organizations came to the aid of the school and its students and the Legislature allocated $174,000 to rebuild the school.

Cutline from Thursday, May 22, 1980 Gazette: Groundbreaking work for the new 100,000-square-foot ShopKo retail center on Highway 14 on Janesville's North Side started this week. The new retail facility will feature a pharmacy, optical center, home improvement and discount book departments in addition to ShopKo's standard merchandising. The general contractor is Tonn and Blank of Michigan City, Ind., and subcontractors will be employed from the local area. A press conference announcing the future plans is scheduled next Tuesday.
