Janesville Gazette photographers pick their favorite photos of 2007.
The outfielder sometimes can be a lost in the game and highlighted only when a play cames their way. When a play does come their way they have to be ready. In this photo, the players were the from the visiting team and my focus was more on the Craig softball team which makes this an unique photo.

The strange composition and lighting put this photo as one of my favorites. Left-Kristin Gulotta, Nick French and Rebecca Wallendal rehearse their one act play "Play" for the UW-Rock County "One-Act Winter Showcase.

The sun sets on a group of horses who breathing steam in the crisp evening air at Hadaya Arabian Stud Farm owned by Jaleen Hacklander at 7602 E. US Highway 14 east of Janesville on 01/16/07. This is a photo that I preconceived while driving back from the Delavan area. It looked like it was going to be a pretty sunset, but I had to wait for about 45 minutes for it to happen. I had to run back into the farm to get the right angle to put the sunset behind the horses. I also love the way it looks like the horses are having a little meeting.

Coral Calhoon, 8, left, and Stephen Smith, 9, battle it out using tar paper rolls and shingle strip boxes they fashioned into guns and helmets. The weekend warriors were visiting their aunt and uncle, Kima and Paul Bly in Janesville while they were having their roof reshingled and along with other visiting children put their imaginations to good use. 05/06/07./ Hands down my favorite photo of the year, and maybe one of my favorites of my entire career. While driving back from an assignment I stumbled on these kids making the most of leftover roofing boxes and materials. You just can't make this kind of thing up. To me it had a very Norman Rockwell feeling to it.

The Oasis cow makes it's way through downtown Janesville on 07-25-07, on it's way to an extreme makeover. The decades old Janesville landmark will be repainted before the developers of the former Oasis property return it to the site. Having taken this photograph, how could it NOT be a favorite. Where but in Janesville.

Nets at the Palmer Park courts are reflected in standing water on 01/12/06. Although moderate temperatures this winter have allowed much greater access to the outdoors than normal, Friday morning's soggy start is just the beginning of a turn that will find southern Wisconsin dealing with more seasonal weather in the next week. Part of a newspaper photographer's job is to show people tiny slices of the world that they might otherwise miss. I've always been a sucker for still lifes that show the beauty of our world that awaits discovery and good composition.

The eyes of Bill Wartmann and the environment that he is in, tells the story of him feeling as an outsider for one of our 50 Who matters. Wartmann says "I'm an outsider," he said. "I will always be an outsider, all my life."

David Mills of Evansville clears the high jump bar at 6 feet during the Tider Invite on 05/04/07. I loved this photo because all of the elements fell into place perfectly, which doesn't happen very often. The high jumper was just in the right spot, the lighting was just a bit overcast and moody and his face was filled with intensity.

Hannah Zugay of Delavan-Darien covers her head in dismay while members of the Kenosha Bradford soccer team celebrate a first period goal in the WIAA Sectional Championship on 06-02-07 Delavan lost in the first OT period 2-1. Quite simply, this is one of those moments that perfectly captures a fundemantal truth of sports. The stark contrast between the joy and despair of the opposing players is a moment every photgrapher searches for.
