As midterm elections come about, I have this constant question: What has happened to my country? We have always treated immigrants with mistrust and sometimes outright hostility. We denied Jewish people before World War II, even though we knew they were being killed. We detested the Irish, even though we knew they were dying by the hundreds through famine.
We have the history of being not what our Constitution tells us we are. But history always corrects us, usually to our shame.
Our president has gotten so blatant at telling lies, and the fact checkers are overloaded after each email or public talk. Our leaders, who are supposed to be our check and balance on the president, are timidly going along with policies that will take away insurance coverage and bring back preexisting clauses. Meanwhile, due to increased military spending and tax cuts to the super rich, we endanger the future of Social Security in the next year or so.
We are putting very little into infrastructure and more toward placating corporations. Check out Gov. Scott Walker's plan to work on the roads to Foxconn, while we can't find the money for the roads that we as citizens travel.
Anyway, please vote. We need to determine if we want our country on this road.
