I find it absolutely unconscionable that the GOP, under the leadership of Majority Leader McConnell, House Speaker Paul Ryan and President Trump, are holding “hostage” more than 790,000 young people who were brought illegally to this country as children through no fault of their own. They are being held “hostage” until the GOP gets a promise of a wall and other changes to our immigration laws.
The extreme right calls them illegal. These young people were minors and did not themselves break the law.
Under the DACA program, they are given legal status that they must maintain. They came forward, placing themselves in the full light of the law, putting themselves and their families at risk because they love this country.
A year ago, a Dreamer, Angelica Villalobos, asked Paul Ryan if she would be deported.
Ryan responded, we don’t want to pull the rug out from DACA beneficiaries. Don’t worry about a knock on your door. Although she is meeting all of DACA’s requirements, Angelica now lives in fear that she will be deported, and she will be separated from her 10-year-old daughter.
Trump wants to remove the Dreamers’ legal status under DACA and turn them into criminals. This action violates the tenets of basic justice in applying ex post facto law.
Speaker Ryan, what is your choice? Will you stand up and keep your promise to Angelica and all the Dreamers in the DACA program or will you choose the anti-immigrant extreme right?
The Dreamers ARE American!
