Grand Rapids, MI -- Theodore Montsma, age 79, went into the loving arms of Jesus on February 24, 2018. His many years or struggle with Parkinson’s Disease is now over. Ted was born on June 16, 1938 in the Netherlands, to Edward and Bernice (Vander Veen) Montsma. He was the 9th of 12 children. In 1947, when he was eight years old, the entire family immigrated to the U.S. and ended up in the Delavan, WI area. Ted married Thelma Joyce Talsma on August 21, 1959 at the Racine Christian Reformed Church in Racine, WI. Ted worked as a self-employed builder for over 40 years. It was a career he loved, serving clients by remodeling and building new homes. He particularly enjoyed two building projects: additions to the Delavan Christian Reformed Church and Delavan Christian School. He retired at the age of 69. Ted and Thelma enjoyed their retirement years in Wisconsin and Florida. Highlights were special vacations for just the two of them, and several with the entire family. In 2014, they moved to Grand Rapids, MI (Holland Home). Ted had a strong faith and a heart of service. His roles in the Delavan CRC were as Elder, Deacon, Youth Leader and Catechism teacher. He was also a Cadet leader and on school board for the Delavan Christian School.

Ted is survived by his wife of 58 years, Thelma; four sons: Thomas (Susan) Montsma of Hudsonville, MI, Timothy (Marjorie) Montsma of Byron Center, MI, Donald (Jill) Montsma of Darien, WI, and Steve (Stephanie) Montsma of Cutlerville, MI; 13 grandchildren: Tom (Cory, Carly, Kirstin, Kurtis), Tim (Serena, Trent), Don (Kasey (fiancé, Jacob Greene), Adam, Alex) and Steve (Austin, Cole, Brody, Wes); three sisters: Theresa Vegter, Alice (Harry) Heeringa and Edna (Bill) Kelder; three brothers: John Montsma, Pete Montsma and Burton Montsma; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: George (Kathy) Talsma, Jim (Kathy) Talsma, Carl (Kelly) Talsma; many nieces and nephews.

The family will greet visitors on Saturday from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Princeton Christian Reformed Church, 5330 Kalamazoo Avenue SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49508, where the funeral service will be held on Sunday, March 4, at 5 p.m., with an hour of visitation prior to the service. Chaplain Frank Guter will officiate. Donations can be made to the Christian school of your choice: Unity Christian High School, South Christian High School or the Delavan Christian School.
