Janesville, WI -- Kaethe “Oma” De La Garza, age 92, of Janesville died on Wednesday, June 6, 2018 at Guardian Angel Assisted Living in Janesville. She was born in Bremen, Germany on April 27, 1926, the daughter of the late Wilhelm and Katherine (Boye) Weigelt. Kaethe married Hugh R. Thomas on May 5, 1948, while he was stationed in Germany, and moved to the United States after he was transferred. On May 29, 1976, Kaethe married Manuel M. De La Garza at the Church by the Side of the Road in Rockton, IL. He predeceased her on November 26, 2015. Kaethe worked on the cushion line at General Motors retiring after 32 years of service. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church. Oma was very proud of her German heritage and prominently displayed it while raising her children, by being a very nurturing mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She enjoyed crocheting, boating with her husband De on their cabin cruiser, playing bingo, and trips to the casinos. Known for her excellent baking and cooking skills, Oma enjoyed treating her family to fresh baked goodies, as well as home cooked meals, that they will dearly miss.
She is survived by her daughters: Susan Thomas, Katie (Dennis) Koel, and Michele (Eddie) McIntyre; step-son: Mark (Debbie) De La Garza; nine grandchildren who she was very proud of; and 18 great-grandchildren who she adored. She was predeceased by her parents; both husbands; her sister, Inga; and her miniature schnauzer, Pumpkin.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 11, 2018 at the Whitcomb – Lynch Funeral Home with Rev. Tom Zillman officiating. A German coffee clutch will be held following the service. Private entombment will be at Milton Lawns Memorial Park. Visitation will be on Monday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.
