Sara Ann E. Selje, Stoughton/Madison, WI (1918 - 2013)

Sara Ann E. Selje, age 94, passed away on Tuesday, March 5, 2013 She was born on Nov. 7, 1918, at home in rural Rio, to Peter and Emma (Reque) Hermanson. As a child, Sara Ann enjoyed being in plays and Christmas programs in grade school in Rio. She attended high school in Rio, graduating from Madison East in 1936. Sara Ann became a cosmetologist as well as an instructor with Madison Academy. She was an owner/operator of a beauty shop in Windsor. Sara Ann married Raymond E. Selje on June 24, 1945, at Spring Prairie Lutheran Church. She later was employed over the years at the Dane County Agents office, in the Secretary of State’s office, and at the University of Wisconsin working with various professors. She loved entertaining and spreading joy with her amazing cooking. She was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church for over 65 years where she taught Sunday school and sang with the choir for 30 years. She was passionate about singing and sang in many church choirs in the Cambridge area during her retirement. She took her first acting role with the Madison Theater Guild at age 80. At age 85, she appeared in the “The Music Man”. Sara Ann was very proud of her family.
Sara Ann is survived by her children: Richard (Nancy), Don (Laurie), and Dean (Bonnie); grandchildren: Eric, Brian, Bruce, April, Leah, Josh, and David; great-grandchildren: Ben, Alison, Jasmine, Noelle, and Jensen; sister, Thelma Bergum Hurd; and many other special relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Raymond, on Feb. 25, 1990; siblings: Gerda, Elsie, Carol, Otto, Selmer, (infant) Gladys, Harold, Alice, Everett and Eugene.
Funeral services for Sara Ann will be held at BETHEL LUTHERAN CHURCH, 312 Wisconsin Ave., Madison, at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 12, 2013, with Reverend Curtis Everson presiding. Burial will be at Spring Prairie Cemetery in Keyeser. Visitation will be held at Bethel Lutheran Church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service on Tuesday at the CHURCH.
