H. Russell Carter, formerly of Janesville, died Jan. 19, 2013, in Saint Louis. He taught and directed theatre at Craig High School from 1961 until 1988. He graduated from Southeast Missouri State University in 1955, and did graduate studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Russell was founding president of the Wisconsin Secondary School Theatre Assn. and Wisconsin State Director of the International Thespian Society. He won the Andrew Weaver Award for "Outstanding Service in Secondary School Theatre." He directed over one hundred plays and musicals at Craig H.S. He wrote an article about a play he directed at Craig in May, 1974, THE ROYAL HUNT OF THE SUN, which was published in DRAMATICS magazine in 1975. He took students to the Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Canada for 20 years.
Russ retired and returned to Saint Louis in 1990. He was a supporter and volunteer for the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra. He was actively involved in promoting the restoration of Kiel Opera House in Saint Louis.
The funeral service will be Jan. 26, 2013. Burial will be in Vahalla Cemetery, Saint Louis. A memorial service will be held in Janesville, WI, on Sunday afternoon, Feb. 17, 2013, at CARGILL UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, at 2 p.m. Anyone who wishes will have an opportunity to share a memory of Russ.
