David Eugene Johnson, Viroqua, WI  (1938 - 2013)

October 19, 1938 - February 25, 2013
David Eugene Johnson, age 74, passed away on Monday morning, Feb. 25, 2013, at his rural Viroqua home surrounded by his family. He was born in Vernon County, on Oct. 19, 1938, to Maurice and Doris (Matson) Johnson. He graduated from Viroqua High School in 1956, where he was active in football and baseball. Shortly after high school he joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served with the 1st Marine Division. He worked as a carpenter most of his working years along with farming on the home farm on S. Asbury Road at rural Viroqua. He was an excellent caregiver for his mother, who died on Oct. 20, 2012, at the age of 94.
David is survived by his three sisters: Janice Johnson of Pleasanton, CA, Jennie (Bob) Holty of Edgerton, who had stayed with him during these past few months to help to take care of her mother and David; Jane Johnson of Viroqua; three nephews: Daniel (Kristin Ranson) Holty of Janesville, Alan (Jessi) Johnson of Aurora, CO, and David Rasmussen of Janesville. He is also survived by six grand nieces and nephews: Jessica, Chad, Hunter, and Brianna Holty and Rhianna and Cody Johnson; and one great grandniece, Brooklyn Staver. David was very proud of his time in the Marine Corps. He was a loyal friend, hard worker, and great neighbor who will be deeply missed. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Alan on Oct. 27, 1959; nephew, Chad Holty; a brother-in-law, C.L. Johnson; and his dad, Maurice on Oct. 30, 1984.
A time to gather and remember Dave will be from 2 until 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 9th, 2013, at the THORSON FUNERAL HOME in Viroqua, where there will be a U.S. Marine Corps Honor Guard tribute at 2:30 p.m. Burial will be in the Bad Axe Lutheran Church Cemetery at Purdy, rural Viroqua.
