Thomas R. Wilcox, 79, of Edgerton, died on Thursday, Jan. 31, 2013, with his family at his side. He had been a resident of the Sterling House in Sun Prairie, for the last two years and was a life-long Edgerton resident. Tom was born in 1933, to the late Russell and Alma (Helgestad) Wilcox. He was a 1951 graduate of Edgerton High School and earned a BS from UW-Whitewater in 1960. He later received his Masters Degree from the University of New Mexico. Tom taught at the University of Whitewater for 28 years until his retirement. He also served in the Air Force from 1952 to 1956. In 1953, he married Joann Schooff. Tom loved the outdoors. He was an avid skier and a ski instructor at Alpine Valley for a number of years. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a member of the Edgerton Conservation Club and Ducks Unlimited. Tom had been a volunteer for the Edgerton Fire Department, and he also played for the Albion Tigers.
Tom is survived by one daughter, Ann (Steve) Porter of Edgerton; two sons, Thomas (Melanie) Wilcox of Gainesville, FL, and Michael (Kathy Hessian) Wilcox of Edgerton; seven grandchildren: Alisa (Josiah) Spinelli, Kelsey Wilcox, Josh Porter, Jason Porter, Jamie Porter, Maggie Wilcox and Michael Wilcox; two sisters, Margie (Dale) Haak of Oregon, WI, and Marion (Tony Johnson) Schmidt of Cambridge; two brothers, Dick (Joan) Wilcox of Edgerton, and Don (Mary) Wilcox of Roseville, CA; several nieces; nephews and cousins.
A gathering and celebration of Tom's life will be held on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013, at the EHLERT FUNERAL HOME, US HWY 51 S, Edgerton, from 2 until 4 p.m. Full Military services by the Edgerton Memorial Squad will be held at the FUNERAL HOME at 4 p.m. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be made to AgraceHospiceCare Inc., Edgerton Conservation Club, or the Edgerton Volunteer Fire Department in Tom's name.
