Edwin Anton Kapek, Janesville  (1925 - 2010)

Edwin Anton Kapek, age 84, a longtime Janesville resident, passed away Friday, February 5, 2010 at Hospice Care Inc., Fitchburg, WI. He was born October 31, 1925 in Berwyn, IL, the son of Edward and Rose (Chluspha) Kapek. He moved to Milton Junction with his parents in the 1937, where they had a truck farm. He graduated from Milton Union High School in 1943, where he was a player on their championship football team. Edwin enlisted in the U.S. Navy, training at the Great Lakes Naval Training Base and served, during World War II, aboard LST 336 in the European Theater of War as Radar, Radioman 3rd Class. Upon returning to the US, Edwin was assigned to Dam Neck Virginia Naval Gunnery Range as the tower control operator, directing aircraft flight patterns for target practice at sleeves being towed by various aircraft. He married his wife of 52 years, Mary Ann Mapes, November 15, 1947 in St. Patrick’s Church, Janesville, WI. She died Feb. 26, 1999. Following his discharge from the US Navy, Edwin was employed by the Parker Pen Company for 40 years, retiring in 1982. He served as president of both local 19593 Pen & Pencil Workers and was part of the transition to local U.R.W. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Church Janesville.
Edwin is survived by many friends. Edwin especially wanted to thank Audry and Bruce Steinmetz for their kindness and generosity and Charles and Jerome McCann for all their care and kindness. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and a brother Joseph.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in ST. PATRICK’S CATHOLIC CHURCH, Janesville at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, February, 2010. Interment will be in Saint Joseph Cemetery, Edgerton, WI. Friends may call at ST. PATRICK’S CATHOLIC CHURCH on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the mass. Edwin had requested that in lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials be made to St. Patrick’s Church or The Rock County Humane Society.
