EVANSVILLE, WI—Bill Porter - A Life Celebrated
If ever a life represented a transition in life, his did. Born in 1921, our country was transitioning into the industrial revolution. As a child, he attended a country school with all eight grades in one room. He attended Evansville High School where he graduated in 1939. A yearbook quote of his says, "All women are volumes if you only know how to read them". He remembered plowing fields with a team of horses, milking cows by hand, "outdoor plumbing", and a telephone party line system where an operator connected your call. Farming was done without chemicals or additives and milk was produced with no BGH. The land, as it was used, was to be re-nourished with manure, contour strips, and crop rotation. These were his techniques and principles. His dreams of being a professional baseball player and finishing college were interrupted by WWII, when he had to come back to the family farm after his brother enlisted. He married Helen Batty in 1948 and they raised three children on the family farm.
One of his mottos was work hard and play hard. (and he knew how to play as hard as he worked.) He very much enjoyed sports, dancing, fishing, playing cards, and socializing. He saw things simply as right or wrong, and there was no in-between. He always said that a man must accept responsibility for his actions and be true to his beliefs, even if they were not popular. If conflict in life came along, you could always fall back on these two principles and hold your head up. His thinking was that even if people don't agree with you, they will always respect you. We will miss you, Dad, but we know you will always be with us.
He is now with his daughter, Marjorie, who passed away three years ago, and is survived by wife, Helen; and sons, Jeffry and Randy; as well as numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
There will be a visitation this Sunday, Nov. 22nd, from 1:30 until 3 p.m. at EVANSVILLE COMMUNITY CHURCH, 457 W Main Street, Evansville. A memorial service at approximately 3:30 p.m. will follow the visitation.
I know if dad were writing this he would close with,
"Bless You All"
