Joseph H. Cummins, Janesville (1919 - 2009)

Joseph H. Cummins, 90, of Janesville, died Thursday, Nov. 19, 2009, at Mercy Hospital, Janesville. He was born on Sept. 19, 1919, in Lancaster, WI, the son of Edward J. and Lena (Fuerstenberg) Cummins. A Janesville resident since 1947, Joseph served in the US Army during WWII as a member of the 33rd Infantry Division four years in the South Pacific. He married Agnes E. Cerny on June 26, 1948, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Janesville. Joseph was employed at the University of Wisconsin, Rock County Campus, retiring in 1985. He was a Charter Member of St. William Catholic Church, a Life Member of the VFW Post #1621, member of the Moose Club #197, Life Member of the DAV, member of the St. William’s Knights of Columbus, and served three terms as a Rock County Board Supervisor. Joseph also was a member of the Rock County Sheriff Reserve for 16 years and served as Commander for 12 years.
Joseph is survived by his wife, Agnes; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Archie and Albert Cummins, both of Lancaster, WI; and a sister, Helen Phelps of Beloit.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 23, 2009, at ST. WILLIAM CATHOLIC CHURCH, with Fr. John Auby officiating. Visitation will be on Sunday, Nov. 22, from 2 until 4 p.m. at ST WILLIAM CATHOLIC CHURCH. Interment will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
