One death was reported at a “well-involved house fire” Friday morning in the town of Spring Prairie, according to a fire official who was at the scene.

A call came in to one of the responding departments at 8:39 a.m. Friday, the official said. Firefighters made an “aggressive attempt” to search the home and knock the fire down after reports of someone trapped inside.

Firefighters responded to N5465 Highway 120 in the town of Spring Prairie, the official said. They recovered a man’s body.

Lyons Fire Department Second Assistant Chief Mike Swanson said the man in the home was elderly and at home by himself.

There are no other injuries or victims at this time, Swanson said.

Highway 120 at Prairie Road in Walworth County was closed for a structure fire, but lanes were cleared late Friday morning, according to alerts from the state Department of Transportation.

Most fire departments in and around Walworth County were called to support the firefighting effort at about 8:40 a.m. Friday.

The call came in from someone down the street, Swanson said.

The house is east of Elkhorn, near the border of the towns of Spring Prairie and Lyons in eastern Walworth County.

The fire is still under investigation, Swanson said.

The state Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating as well.

Correction: This article was updated Feb. 26 to say the fire occurred in the town of Spring Prairie, which is just north of the municipality where a fire official said the fire occurred.
