Greg Peck of Janesville won the first-place ring in the Jade Ring nonfiction category at the Wisconsin Writers Association’s annual conference Oct. 7 in Neenah.

The story, “Small Decision, Big Consequence,” told of his father’s time spent with the 1092nd Army Corps of Engineers in Korea and how an innocent decision to forgo leave in Tokyo saved his life. Greg’s dad, Wallace, died in August.

Peck, who retired in 2016 as The Gazette’s opinion page editor, also took honorable mention in the association’s humor contest. His story, “Just Short of Road Rage at the Checkout Aisles,” is Peck’s take on lacking patience at the grocery store.

Peck is author of “Death Beyond the Willows,” the true story of a 1927 wedding day tragedy that involved a couple married in his hometown of Marshall in Dane County. He has been a member of the writers association since 2006 and served three years as a board member. does not condone or review every comment. Read more in our Commenter Policy Agreement
