Natalee Lynd of Clinton FFA shakes hands with the fair judge, Mark Johnson, after being awarded grand champion Wednesday at the Rock County 4-H Fair in Janesville.

Name: Natalee Lynd, 17

Club: Clinton FFA

Years showing at fair: 14

Sheep’s name: Brennan

Breed: Crossbred

What it takes to win: Constantly working with the animals to develop a comfort level with them is key, Lynd said. She spends time walking her sheep and caring for his skin and hair.

Lynd started showing pigs when she was 3 years old, so she has plenty of rapport with animals. It takes practice to handle sheep, but once she got used to it, it’s not difficult, she said.

What the judge looks for: Mark Johnson, a judge from Illinois, said he mainly looks for a lamb’s muscle quality, coat finish and overall body structure. Lynd didn’t need to hide any flaws in her lamb, he said.

Reserve champion

Name: Katie Klassy

Club: Plymouth 4-H
