SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital-Janesville named Ben Layman as its second president since opening in 2012.
Layman will replace Kerry Swanson, who served as president for the hospital’s opening, said Kathryn Scott, public relations liaison for SSM Health. Swanson left in April to become regional president for hospital operations for SSM Health in southern Illinois.
The new president comes to Janesville from Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he worked for Spectrum Health as chief operating officer for a 40-bed acute care hospital and 65-bed rehabilitation center, according to a news release. He also worked as director of advanced business development before becoming chief operating officer.
Before working at Spectrum Health, he worked in leadership roles at Adventist Health’s St. Helena Hospital and St. Helena Hospital Clearlake in California, according to the release.
Layman will be responsible for “managing and growing the organization’s hospital programs and health services throughout south central Wisconsin,” according to the release. His background includes strategic development and growth, value-based program development, operational optimization and change management.
His new position as president of St. Mary’s is prefaced by 13 years of experience in health care, according to the release. Layman received a master’s degree in business administration from Sonoma State University in California and a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Walla Walla University in Washington.
Scott said she thinks Layman will continue supporting the dedication St. Mary’s Hospital has to serving the Janesville community.
“I think he is committed to providing what the community needs but certainly hoping to grow in ways that will benefit the community just as Kerry was and we all are,” Scott said.
