A new option for high-speed internet might come to Orfordville, pending approval from the village board.

AJ Becker, a representative from Sonic Spectrum, spoke to the village’s police committee last week about his company’s services, according to meeting minutes.

The Durand, Illinois-based, company provides high-speed service—up to 25 megabits per second—in rural areas near the state line, including in Footville and Albany, Becker told the committee.

The company wants to broadcast its wireless signal from the village water tower, joining Rise Broadband in that location.

In exchange for use of the tower, Sonic would give the Orfordville Police Department five surveillance cameras to be used throughout the village, according to Becker’s presentation. Additional cameras would be available for purchase.

If approved by the board, the company would need 45 days to install its equipment and get Orfordville online, Becker told the committee.

Rise Broadband, Frontier Internet and Litewire Internet now offer service in Orfordville. A petition asking for another internet option has circulated on social media recently.

Village Clerk Sherri Waege provided a written record of Sonic’s presentation to The Gazette.

Waege declined to answer additional questions, telling a Gazette reporter they would be answered at the board meeting.

The village board will meet at 7 p.m. Monday at Orfordville Village Hall, 303 E. Beloit St.
