Madi Melms of Parkview FFA and her barrow, Carl, won grand champion Wednesday at the Rock County 4-H Fair in Janesville.

Name: Madi Melms, 19

Club: Parkview FFA

Years showing at fair: One

Barrow’s name: Carl

Breed: Crossbred

What it takes to win: Without any fair showing experience, Melms said confidence was the biggest factor in her win.

“I’m going up against some of the best of the best, kids who show jackpots,” she said.

Melms decided to start showing because her boyfriend’s family raises pigs. The barrow competition was her second show this year, and she was excited to capture a title so quickly, she said.

What the judge looks for: Ryan Harrell, a judge from Indiana, said he’s searching for a “complete pig” when judging the barrow competition. That means good body structure, muscle and aesthetic appeal, he said.

Melms’ pig encompassed all those qualities, and the animal’s thickness set him apart, Harrell said.

Reserve champion

Name: Kallista Kuhlow

Club: Bradford 4-H
