The Democratic Party of Rock County is hosting a public chili challenge and fundraiser with congressional candidates Randy Bryce and Cathy Myers on Thursday at the UAW Local 95 headquarters.

Bryce and Myers are the only declared Democratic candidates taking on Republican Rep. Paul Ryan in the 1st Congressional District, which includes parts of Rock County.

They will be allotted time to speak separately and answer audience questions, but they will not debate.

Lauren Hitt, Bryce’s communications director, wrote in an email to The Gazette that Bryce is “excited” about the event and “thinks it’s really important to be accessible to the people you want to represent.”

Myers, a current Janesville School Board member, announced her candidacy in June. Her campaign did not respond to a request for comment about the event.

The chili challenge will take place before the candidates speak. Anyone may sign up to bring homemade chili, cornbread and desserts. Utensils, bowls and coffee will be provided along with a bar. The winner of the chili challenge will receive a prize. However, people are invited to participate without bringing chili.

The event starts at 6 p.m., and tickets are $10 each. Proceeds will benefit the Democratic Party of Rock County’s efforts to open a permanent office in downtown Janesville.

To sign up for the chili challenge, email democraticparty ofrockcounty@gmail.com or call 608-449-3777. Tickets will be available at the door.
